Phillies 2017 Season Preview
Ready to check out our 2017 Philadelphia Phillies predictions? The Philadelphia Phillies come into this season with not many expectations. Most of their fans know that this team is still in the middle of a rebuild and not to have many expectations for this club.
MLB Phillies Predictions & Handicapping Insight
A lot of players that are on this team are just short term options as they continue to develop their players in the minor leagues.
But they have a few good players on this team that are going to be a part of their future plans and have a chance to have a really good season. But this team doesn’t have enough talent up and down the team to even compete for a playoff spot.
2017 MLB Team Previews – Philadelphia Phillies
- National League East +2000
- National League +6600
- World Series +15000
Key Additions:
- Howie Kendrick
- Michael Saunders
- Clay Buchholz
- Hitting Coach Matt Stairs
Most of the guys they added in the off season are just place holders until they can get some of their minor league guys ready.
I really like the addition of Clay Buchholz. He had a very up and down career with Boston Red Sox so it’s hard to really know what you are going to get, but maybe what he needed was change. Even if he doesn’t work it was still a very low risk addition.

The other addition I like is Matt Stairs. Last year the Phillies ranked dead last in hitting. Hopefully Matt Stairs can take a new approach with the guys and get a better result.
Key Losses:
- Carlos Ruiz
- Ryan Howard
The biggest name to stand out on this list is Ryan Howard. He was the face of the franchise for the last decade for the Phillies, although he has been terrible the last couple years. Now the big question is which young guy is going to step up now and be the new face of this rebuild and franchise.
Phillies Predictions: Projected Lineup:
- 2B Cesar Hernandez
- OF Howie Kendrick
- OF Odubel Herrera
- 3B Maikel Franco
- 1B Tommy Joseph
- OF Michael Saunders
- SS Freddy Galvis
- C Cameron Rupp
Last year the Phillies were last in the hitting the baseball, and there isn’t much in this line up that should make anyone believe it’s going to be any different this year.
There isn’t much to be scared or afraid of. There isn’t much power, speed or even that much talent from top to bottom. I would also expect the opening day line up to be nothing close to what the line up looks like when the season ends.
Phillies Predictions: Projected Rotation:
- Jeremy Hellickson
- Aaron Nola
- Clay Buchholz
- Jerad Eickhoff
- Vincent Velasquez
Just like the rotation there isn’t really much to get excited about with this pitching staff. Not one of these guys is projected to pitch over 200 innings or get more then 11 wins.
This is another place where I expect a lot of mid season call ups and for this rotation to be very fluid throughout the season.
Phillies Predictions: Projected Closer:
- Jeanmar Gomez
Jeanmar Gomez has won the right to be the closer to start the season for the Phillies, although who really knows how long that will really last.

Last year for the Phillies he appeared in 70 games and had 37 saves. Although he had 37 saves he really doesn’t have closer type stuff, but he is the best choice right now.
He actually had a negative WAR last year and I don’t really see that changing this year. Don’t be surprised if they have a few different guys close games this year.
2017 Philadelphia Phillies Prediction:
The Philadelphia Phillies organization and their fans really hope to be seeing the fruits of their rebuild zone, but unfortunately for them that year isn’t going to be this year.
This year is going to be used to get the Phillies better and really get some of their guys up from the minors to see what they have in them.

I expect this team to finish in last place of the NL east, and actually be in the bottom three off all teams in the Major Leagues.
The over/under for the Phillies sits at 72.5. I expect that number to actually be under. I think they will finish with around 68 wins.
