Marlins 2017 Season Preview
Ready to check out our 2017 Miami Marlins predictions? The question is whether this team can get right mentally after last season’s tragic loss and become at least a Wild Card contender. The lineup looks like it could be surprisingly good but the pitching might not be good enough.
MLB Marlins Predictions & Handicapping Insight
The Marlins are one of the hardest teams to try and handicap heading into 2017. They definitely should not be bad but their pitching is such a mystery that it is hard to figure out what their ceiling might be. Will there still be lingering effects from the loss of Jose Fernandez.
If this is the year the trio of high potential outfielders puts it all together then the offense will be very good. They need one of those guys to be more than All-Star good, they need one to be MVP level good…and for Giancarlo Stanton to make it through the season in one piece.
2017 MLB Team Previews – Miami Marlins
- National League East +900
- National League +2500
- World Series +5000
Key Additions:
- SP Edinson Volquez
- SP Dan Straily
- RP Brad Ziegler
After a good first season in KC Volquez was terrible last year for the Royals. A move to the NL usually helps the numbers but at his stage of career it is hard to know if a rebound is likely. He could be one of those guys who falls off the cliff.
Straily had an under the radar season in Cincinnati last year. It is a good pickup but last year was probably his ceiling even though he put up monster numbers in the minors.

Ziegler is one of those “effective” relievers, not a stuff guy. Having him around means that they have deepened their bullpen and he can be a good secondary closer.
Key Losses:
- SP Andrew Cashner
A midseason move that did not pan out all for the Marlins. He was terrible in Miami and looks to rebuild his value in Texas.
Marlins Predictions: Projected Lineup:
- 2B Dee Gordon
- 3B Martin Prado
- CF Christian Yelich
- RF Giancarlo Stanton
- Marcell Ozuna
- 1B Justin Bour
- C J.T. Realmuto
- SS Adeiny Hechavarria
I like this lineup quite a lot. I absolutely love the outfield where I see 100 homers and an average of 100RBIs per man as a real possibility. I am also a big fan of Gordon at the top. He is one of the few speedsters that has the green light all the time and will be in the lineup all season this year after last year’s suspension.
Nobody talks about J.T. Realmuto but how many starting catchers hit .300 last year? He also chipped in 11 homers and 12 steals. Those are awesome fantasy numbers that really lengthen this lineup too. He could be even better and so can first baseman Justin Bour.
Marlins Predictions: Projected Rotation:
- RH Edinson Volquez
- LH Wei-Yin Chen
- RH Dan Straily
- RH Tom Koehler
- LH Adam Conley
There is definitely no ace in this group. I like Straily to ultimately emerge as their best pitcher but he is really more like a solid #3. I am definitely not a fan of Chen. The fact that he had his worst MLB season after getting out of the AL East is not a good indicator.
Conley definitely has some upside but he walks too many guys and Koehler is a total JAG (Just a Guy). This group would need a lot of offense to be big winners this season.
Marlins Predictions: Projected Closer:
- RH A.J. Ramos
Ramos has been an effective closer the last couple of years with 30+ saves in each. He misses bats but does not fall into the feared category.

Bringing in Ziegler gives the Marlins another option to close games and gives Miami a hopefully more effective back of the bullpen.
The guy to really watch is Kyle Barraclough. He struck out 113 batters in just 72 innings last season. He walks too many guys to be counted in the most high leverage situations but is the guy they want to advance up the line.
2017 Miami Marlins Prediction:
The Marlins are going to be an interesting team this season. They might be better than expected but that still is probably not enough to get them close to the Mets or the Nationals.
At the same time if they are down a little they probably are not going to sink behind Philly or Atlanta. There really doesn’t seem to be any scenario where they are not a third place team, the question is whether they are closer to the bottom or the top.
If things break well they could have a top five offense and maybe the pitchers, who are mediocre, surprise. Maybe. This looks like a .500 team that will most of the time win and lose the games they are supposed to.

I am a big fan of their offense though and since I think the pitching will be nothing special the overs are how I will look to play this team early on.
