White Sox 2017 Season Preview
Ready to check out our 2017 Chicago White Sox predictions? After a disappointing 2016 campaign the Chicago White Sox will try to have a rebound year in 2017. The White Sox will be under near leadership this season. Robin Ventura was let go after last season, and Rick Renteria was hired a few weeks into the off season.
MLB White Sox Predictions & Handicapping Insight
For the White Sox to compete they need to find some role players who are going to step up and have better then expected seasons.
They have the starting pieces to being a good team right now, but it looks like it still might be a couple more years before the rebuild is complete, and they are really competing for the American League Central again.
2017 MLB Team Previews – Chicago White Sox
- American League Central +2500
- American League +5000
- World Series +10000
- Derek Holland
- Lucas Giolito
- Michael Kopech
The White Sox were much more of sellers then buyers this off season. Most of the additions that they made this off season were to sure up the pitching staff.
Their biggest name they signed this off season was Derek Holland. Last year with the Rangers he had 20 starts. He finished with a 7-9 record and had an ERA of 4.95.
Although last year wasn’t great it was a low risk signing. If they can get a few more wins out of him this year it will be a worthwhile signing.
- Matt Albers
- Alex Avila
- Adam Eaton
- Chris Sale
Of course the biggest name on this list is Chris Sale who was traded to the Boston Red Sox for prospects. Although it was clear that the White Sox were in rebuild mode, that trade put them into full rebuild mode.
White Sox Predictions: Projected Lineup:
- SS Tim Anderson
- LF Melky Cabrera
- 1B Jose Abreu
- 3B Todd Frazier
- RF Avisail Garcia
- DH Matt Davidson
- C Omar Narvaez
- 2B Tyler Saladino
- CF Peter Bourjos
The big question about this lineup is how can the bottom half perform. The top half of the lineup is a solid top five and most any teams would take those guys.
But the bottom half is a lot of trouble. Most of those guys would be bench players on most other major league teams. So for the team to have success, they need to have the bottom of the lineup to really step up in a big way.
White Sox Predictions: Projected Rotation:
- Jose Quintana
- Miguel Gonzalez
- Derek Holland
- James Shields
- Carlos Rodon
The White Sox Rotation has a lot of big names on it but most of them are coming off a down season last year. The one true ace on this roster is Jose Quintana. Last year he went 13-12 and had a 3.20 ERA. If he would have had more run support last year He would have had a few more wins.
The rest of the rotation after him is quite the toss up. They could have one of the better rotations in the major leagues, or one of the worst just depending if the pitchers can improve coming into this season.
White Sox Predictions: Projected Closer:
- David Robertson
David Robertson enters his fourth year as a full time closer. After closing for one year for the Yankees he has spent the last two years as the White Sox closer, and has done a good job in the role.
For a team that had a pretty bad season last year Robertson was one of the bright spots. He had 37 saves and 75 strikeouts and a very good 3.47 era last year.
2017 Chicago White Sox Prediction:
If your’re a White Sox fan and have the hopes that your team is going to make the World Series this year, and the town of Chicago will be about the White Sox you might want to change your expectations a bit.
This team is in the middle of a rebuild and probably will be for a couple of years. This team won’t be the worst team in the Major Leagues but it also won’t be the best.
The key for this team is the pitching staff. If the pitching staff has a good year, they could suprise some people and maybe be a fringe playoff team.
But I really don’t think that will happen. I think the White Sox will be sellers at the trade deadline and this will be a young inexperienced team by the time the season ends.
The over/under for the White Sox is 73.5. I don’t think they will quite hit that mark. I think they will finish in last place in the American League Central with right around 70 wins.
