Qualifying for the 2025 Kentucky Derby takes a swing through Florida this weekend with the running of the (G2) Fountain Of Youth Stakes. The FOY awards Derby qualifying points on a 50-25-15-10-5 scale. Last year’s winner, Dornoch, went on to run 10th in the Derby before winning the Belmont Stakes. The 2023 winner, Forte, was the odds-on favourite for the Derby that year but had to be scratched with a hoof problem.

A perfect two-for-two on the Gulfstream Park dirt, River Thames won those events by a combined 11 1/4 lengths. In both cases he tracked just off the pacesetter before taking over and drawing away in the stretch.
Those races were at six furlongs and one mile, so now he stretches out a bit further again, while also taking a step up in class.

Also a winner of two straight at Gulfstream, in Burnham Square’s case the most recent of those was in the (G3) Holy Bull Stakes where the win gave him 20 Derby qualifying points.
He’s never been off the board in four lifetime starts, and is just over a length away from being undefeated. He’s also one of two in the field to have recorded a triple-digit Brisnet speed figure, hitting 101 in the Holy Bull.
Sovereignty Race Odds: 3-1
Last out Sovereignty came from deep in the pack to grab command in the stretch and win going away by five lengths in the (G3) Street Sense Stakes at Churchill Downs. Third-place finisher Sandman went on to win his next, and has since run second and third in two graded stakes at Oaklawn Park.
This will be Sovereignty’s first start since the Street Sense in late October. Trainer Bill Mott is a solid 22% winners coming off a 90-day plus layoff.
Gate To Wire Race Odds: 6-1
Gate To Wire was a first-out winner on turf and even ran in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf Sprint last fall. But last out he was switched to the dirt for the seven furlong Swale Stakes and was an easy five-length winner.
He’s improved his speed figure in each of his successive five races and fits with these from that perspective. Distance might be the question as he has yet to race past that seven furlong mark.

Jockey tactics are going to be important here, as most of the top contenders seem to want to stalk off the pace or even come from further back. Of those listed above, River Thames probably has the most natural early speed and could find himself in front by default.
Two starts back trainer Ian Wilks added blinkers to Burnham Square, and it seems to have worked. I think he’s been the best of the bunch against the most solid competition. I like the fact he’s two-for-two at the track and two-for-three at the distance. He’s my pick to win.
