2026 NCAAF Handicapping – South Florida Bulls vs East Carolina Pirates
Here’s why I’m backing an OVER bet below in my Bulls Pirates free pick & gambling prediction for this matchup.
Bulls vs. Pirates Gameday
The South Florida Bulls visit the East Carolina Pirates on Friday, November 6, 2026, for a Week 10 American Conference showdown. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:30 PM ET at Dowdy-Ficklen Stadium in Greenville, North Carolina, with ESPN2 carrying the game.
South Florida enters at 6-2 overall and 2-2 in conference play under Brian Hartline. The Bulls are 2-1 on the road and have won consecutive games after dropping their previous two.
South Florida has the better record, but East Carolina has no intention of making Greenville a friendly stop.
The Pirates are 4-4 overall and 2-2 in conference play. ECU has won three of its four home games, giving the home crowd reason to expect another competitive performance.
South Florida wants to remain in the conference championship conversation. East Carolina needs two more victories to reach traditional bowl eligibility, so there’s plenty riding on this one.
The Bulls lead the all-time series 9-4, although ECU has won the last three meetings. History favors South Florida overall, but the recent bragging rights belong to the Pirates.
It’s Week 10, South Florida Bulls vs. East Carolina Pirates, hopefully we get a great matchup.

South Florida Bulls vs. East Carolina Pirates Odds & Previous Games
East Carolina is favored by 1.5 points, with the Pirates listed at -128 on the moneyline. South Florida returns +106, while the total is 39.5 points.
The Bulls are 3-2 over their previous five games, beating UAB 30-10, Kent State 29-2 and Bowling Green 14-6. Losses came against UTSA 31-24 and Temple 17-13.
East Carolina has also won three of its last five, defeating Temple 17-9, Rice 28-12 and North Carolina Central 42-9. The Pirates lost to Memphis 41-34 and UAB 30-17.
The total was available around 45.5 before falling to 39.5, while the favorite switched from South Florida to East Carolina. That’s a substantial adjustment ahead of a game featuring uncertainty at quarterback.
The teams last met in 2022, when ECU won 48-28 in Boca Raton after the game was relocated because of Hurricane Ian. Friday brings the series back to Greenville for the first time since 2021.
Both programs have shown they can compete, but neither offense has been particularly dependable. The sportsbooks have made this nearly a pick’em, leaving execution and field position as important considerations.

Pirates Stats
East Carolina has scored 192 points through eight games, averaging 24 per contest. The Pirates have accumulated 1,492 passing yards, while their ground attack has been the more dependable part of the offense.
TJ Engleman Jr. leads the backfield with 689 rushing yards and five TDs. He gives ECU a physical presence capable of handling a substantial workload.
The Pirates have allowed 193 points defensively, averaging slightly more than 24 per game. They’ve intercepted eight passes and shown they can create opportunities when opponents get careless.
ECU held Temple to nine points in its latest victory, with the defense intercepting three passes. The Pirates also benefited from a productive rushing attack that helped control possession.
Injuries remain a concern, with receivers Jeremiah Melvin and Dillon Lorick carrying questionable designations. Their availability could affect the passing game’s depth.
Bulls Stats
South Florida has scored 216 points through eight games, averaging 27 per contest. The Bulls have accumulated 1,333 passing yards and 1,184 rushing yards, with the offense leaning on a balanced approach rather than explosive passing production.
D.J. Crowther leads the ground attack with 578 rushing yards and seven TDs. His ability to produce between the tackles has been valuable for an offense that hasn’t always moved the ball consistently.
Defensively, South Florida has allowed only 116 points, averaging 14.5 per game. The Bulls have recovered seven opposing fumbles and have been particularly effective at turning defensive pressure into mistakes.
Against UAB, the defense recorded six sacks and scored twice on fumble returns. C.J. Hicks personally contributed four sacks, tying a school record.
South Florida’s defense has been doing the heavy lifting, and occasionally the scoring, too.
The Bulls have held opponents to 178 passing yards per game. That secondary gives Hartline a strong foundation while his offense works through its personnel concerns.
Bulls vs. Pirates QB Matchup
East Carolina quarterback Mitch Griffis has completed 69 of 126 passes for 753 yards, four TDs and five interceptions. He’s handled the latest starting assignment, although his 54.8% completion rate leaves plenty of room for improvement.
Griffis threw for 130 yards against Temple, completing 17 of 30 passes with an interception. ECU relied heavily on its rushing attack rather than asking him to win the game through the air.
Emory Williams has also contributed, completing 73 of 117 attempts for 716 yards, seven TDs and two interceptions. His production gives ECU another experienced option if the coaching staff makes a change.
South Florida’s Michael Van Buren Jr. has completed 116 of 181 passes for 1,273 yards, six TDs and no interceptions. He’s protected the football effectively throughout the season.
However, Van Buren left the UAB game with an injury, and his availability for Friday remains uncertain. That’s a significant development for an offense already searching for greater consistency.

Luke Kromenhoek replaced him against UAB, completing seven of ten passes for 39 yards. His bigger contribution came on the ground, where he rushed for 92 yards on 15 carries.
Kromenhoek offers a different dimension with his running ability, although his passing experience this season is limited. Hartline has a genuine decision to make before kickoff.
ECU has received production from two quarterbacks, while South Florida must determine whether Van Buren can return. Neither coaching staff can afford to ignore protection or ball security.
South Florida Bulls vs. East Carolina Pirates bottom line: ECU’s quarterback options offer experience, but South Florida’s defensive strength keeps the Bulls dangerous regardless of who starts.

Bulls Pirates Free Pick: Over 39.5
Here is my Bulls Pirates free pick: I’m playing Over 39.5 Friday night. The total has taken a beating, and now we’re looking at a number where 24-17 gets the money. I’ll take that opportunity.
South Florida’s quarterback uncertainty is real, but it doesn’t automatically make this an under. East Carolina has allowed opponents to score, and USF has shown it can put points on the board without relying entirely on its passing game.
At 39.5, one defensive touchdown can make the under bettors miserable in a hurry.
That’s the angle I like here. A short field, a defensive score or a couple of busted assignments can change the math before either offense finds its rhythm.
I’m not buying the idea that quarterback uncertainty means four quarters of offensive misery. Both teams have ways to manufacture points, and this number leaves room for some ugly football. I’ll ride with Over 39.5.
