The Alamo Bowl is usually a quality match up between two evenly matched teams. Over the last seven Alamo Bowl games, five of them have been one possession games.
The only two others that weren’t were match ups that were, on paper, not really evenly matched.
Also, this bowl featured the TCU come back over Oregon when they trailed 31-0 at halftime. Such a crazy game.
Anyway, this will be Iowa State’s first time in the Alamo Bowl and Washington State’s first time since 1994. The Big 12 has beaten the Pac-12 the last three years; so we’ll see if the Cyclones can continue that trend or if the Cougars can snap that streak.
Iowa State Cyclones
It was an interesting year for the Cyclones as they seemed to be well on their way to yet another forgetful year. They started off 1-3, but then an upset on the road over Oklahoma State was the springboard for them upsetting the Mountaineers at home and reeling off three more wins.
They had a real shot at playing in the Big 12 Championship game had they defeated Texas at home, but they fell short. Nonetheless, this was a great year for the Cyclones and Matt Campbell is one of the hottest names in the coaching market right now.
When you watch Iowa State they do just enough to win and statistically they don’t really blow you away. Offensively, they rank pretty low, but defensively they are good.
While the numbers may not be eye popping you have to consider that they do play in the Big 12. Ranking 34th in total yards, 62nd in passing yards, and 36th in points allowed is quite the accomplishment.
They key for the Cyclones is getting David Montgomery going and Brock Purdy doing enough to get the offense going.
Washington State Cougars
Washington State never really got the love that they probably deserved. Sure, they may not have the talent and athletes that some of the other teams have, but nearly going undefeated in a power-5 conference should be rewarded and it really wasn’t.
Washington State only loss before the Apple Cup came against USC on the road on a Friday night. Plus, there was a controversial call that spurred the Trojans to victory.
Even still with only two losses there are teams above them with more losses and just as many question marks. Florida has been an overrated team all year long and Penn State hasn’t exactly been dominate at any point this season.
It just seems a bit much, but I guess the rankings don’t really matter all that much in the playoff era anyway and Washington State will have the chance to somewhat prove themselves against Iowa State in the Alamo Bowl.
I say somewhat because it’s not as if the Cougars will get a lot of love for beating the Cyclones if they do because, you know, it’s Iowa State.
Anyway, it should be a great game and that Cyclones defense will be put to the test against, statistically, the best passing offense in college football.
The Cougars are actually not all that bad on the defensive end, either. When you watch them they do a solid job and the statistics bare that out. The Cougars are 29th in total yards, 47th against the pass, 37th against the rush, and they rank 39th in points.
NCAA Football Handicapping Trends
- Washington State is 10-2 ATS this year
- Iowa State is 0-4 ATS in their last four games
- Iowa State under is 3-1-1 in their last five games
- Washington State under is 3-1 in their last four games
Free Alamo Bowl NCAA Football Pick
This should be a good game and a potentially a pretty interesting game. The Alamodome is typically one of the better attended bowl games and even though it’s Iowa State and Washington State, hopefully, it will be a typical crowd coming to San Antonio.
4* Free NCAA Betting Pick: Washington State -3.5
Right now, I’ve got Washington State winning and covering. Iowa State could, potentially, have distractions if Matt Campbell does get hired away by a team.
We’ll have to see, but I’ve got the Cougars passing attack winning and covering in this one. The Cougars should have a chip on their shoulder and I’m sure Gardner Manshew will have something to prove, as well as he didn’t even get an invite to New York.
2018 Alamo Bowl Free Score Prediction: – WSU 34-24
