WHERE DO TEAMS STAND IN MLB?
Looking for some early 2016 MLB power rankings? We are just past the quarter-way mark in the MLB season. There have been some true surprise teams and there have been some true disappointments.
And of course there are some teams that are exactly where we thought they would be at this point of the year.
Version 3.0 – 2016 MLB Power Rankings
The cream has started to rise to the top in the MLB standings and it is reflected in this week’s Power Rankings.
So where does your team six weeks or so games into the Regular season.
Let’s break it down in the May 23 edition of Dave B’s MLB Power Rankings.
1. Chicago Cubs (29-13)
Two Weeks Ago: 1
The Cubs have gone just 4-6 in their last 10 games overall but still hold a lead in the MLB Overall standings – they lost a double header at home to the Padres and lost a series with the Brewers earlier this week.
Don’t be scared folks – the pitching and the offense have been terrific – the skid won’t last long.
2. Boston Red Sox (27-17)
Two Weeks Ago: 5
The Red Sox have been the nicest surprise bin baseball this year – they somehow have one of the more balanced teams in the game. But it is the offense that has them #2.
They lead the Majors in hits, doubles, batting average, OPS and extra-base hits and Jackie Bradley Jr. and David Ortiz have been off-the-charts. If the pitching holds up Boston is a contender – that’s a BIG IF.
3. Washington Nationals (27-17)
Two Weeks Ago: 4
The Nats dominated their division foe Mets earlier this week – they can thank their pitching which at 2.79 ERA is second-lowest in baseball. The staff also has a MLB leading 412 punch-outs on the season so far.
The offense has been stagnant but once they catch stride Washington is who we thought they’d be.
4. San Francisco Giants (27-19)
Two Weeks Ago: 16
By far the biggest risers in the Rankings this week, the Giants have gone 10-1 in their last 11 games – impressive! Sweeping the D-Backs and the Padres during an eight game win streak certainly helped.
With one of the best pitching staffs in the game right now, it is hard to see San Francisco slipping much the next few months.
5. Baltimore Orioles (26-16)
Two Weeks Ago: 7
The Orioles just won’t go away! They have gone 6-4 on their last 10 games and still co-lead the AL East with the surging Red Sox. We knew the offense would be strong but a staff that owns the sixth lowest ERA in the Majors (3.80) was unforeseen.
I don’t know if Baltimore can keep it up but for now they are an easy top 5!
6. Seattle Mariners (26-17)
Two Weeks Ago: 6
The Mariners won a series on the road in Baltimore before sweeping the Reds over the weekend. They have gone just 6-4 in their last 10 games but have benefitted from a vastly improved bullpen and offense this year.
Seattle had the talent last year but fell short of expectations – not this year!
7. New York Mets (25-18)
Two Weeks Ago: 3
The Mets have gone just 4-6 in their last 10 games but have won three straight heading into the week. The team shockingly leads the NL in homers (60) and the pitching staff looks stacked thanks to Noah Syndergaard.
That said Matt Harvey will have to snap out of his funk if the Mets want to contend.
8. Chicago White Sox (26-18)
Two Weeks Ago: 2
How good has Chris Sale been? He’s now 9-0 with a 1.58 ERA, 0.717 WHIP and 8.2 K/9 – incredible! His team hasn’t been great the last couple weeks after starting the season on fire – they have gone just 3-8 in their last 11 but have the players to make some noise.
If they don’t figure something out soon however – they will drop out of the top 10.
9. Pittsburgh Pirates (23-19)
Two Weeks Ago: 10
The Pirates still have some work to do if they want to be in the conversation with division foes – the Cubs. I have faith in a team whose additions – John Jaso and Matt Joyce are making a huge difference this year.
The Pirates at 6-4 in their last 10 games and despite beating up on some bad teams are still top 10 caliber.
10. Texas Rangers (25-19)
Two Weeks Ago: 11
The Rangers enter this week on a three game win streak – the impending return of Yu Darvish and the presence of Shin-Soo Choo off injury is a very, very good sign for this team.
Texas’s pitching (starters specifically) have been among the AL’s best all year – Darvish will only make them better. Look out for Texas – they are a scary team once healthy.
11. St. Louis Cardinals (23-21)
Two Weeks Ago: 13
Somehow this team is leading the NL in runs scored this year – amazing. The team has gone just 5-5 in their last 10 games and are shockingly one game under .500 at home so far.
Once their inconsistent but seemingly solid starting pitching comes around the Cards will be an interesting team to watch indeed.
12. Cleveland Indians (22-19)
Two Weeks Ago: 15
The Indians head into the week on a two game losing streak (against scorching Boston) but have gone 6-4 in their last 10 games overall.
Josh Tomlin has been terrific – 6-0 with a 3.56 ERA and 1.023 WHIP in seven starts while Rajai Davis and Francisco Lindor have been very good offensively for this team.
Cleveland has some pieces and could make some strides the next couple of months.
13. Kansas City Royals (22-21) Two Weeks Ago: 18
14. Philadelphia Phillies (25-19) Two Weeks Ago: 14
15. Los Angeles Dodgers (22-23) Two Weeks Ago: 12
16. Tampa Bay Rays (20-21) Two Weeks Ago: 17
17. Toronto Blue Jays (22-24) Two Weeks Ago: 8
18. Miami Marlins (22-21) Two Weeks Ago: 9
19. Detroit Tigers (21-22) Two Weeks Ago: 20
20. New York Yankees (21-22) Two Weeks Ago: 26
21. Colorado Rockies (21-21) Two Weeks Ago: 19
22. Arizona Diamondbacks (21-25) Two Weeks Ago: 21
23. Los Angeles Angels (20-24) Two Weeks Ago: 22
24. Oakland Athletics (19-26) Two Weeks Ago: 23
25. Houston Astros (17-28) Two Weeks Ago: 24
26. San Diego Padres (19-26) Two Weeks Ago: 25
27. Milwaukee Brewers (18-26) Two Weeks Ago: 28
28. Cincinnati Reds (15-29) Two Weeks Ago: 27
29. Atlanta Braves (12-31) Two Weeks Ago: 30
30. Minnesota Twins (11-32) Two Weeks Ago: 29
