The NBA All-Star Game has yet another new wrinkle to it this year, with team captains LeBron James and Giannis Antetokounmpo choosing their teams in a live, playground-style draft 30 minutes before the game itself.
Additionally, the NBA announced that reserves will be chosen before starters. Clearly, that’s an attempt to remove the spotlight from the last player chosen.
Either way, this should be a fun one.

Making an informed pick for this game is damn near impossible considering we don’t know the rosters—unless you’re placing your bet after the draft. (This is advised.)
That said, there’s one place we can start: the team captains.
Team Giannis may be without its Greek God of a captain, with Giannis Antetokounmpo’s status unclear following an injury right before the All-Star break.
On the other hand, LeBron James should be good to go, but he, too, is dealing with a lingering injury that could impact his minutes.

2023 All-Star Game Odds: MVP
LeBron James, Los Angeles Lakers: +550
Assuming LeBron James plays, it’s easy to see why he’ll be the MVP favorite.
For starters, he’s on an absolute tear. At age 38 and in Year 20, he’s somehow still playing at an elite level, and in a season that’s seen him pass Kareem Abdul-Jabbar in all-time scoring, an All-Star MVP trophy would just be icing on the cake.
The only catch is that his injury may play a factor in how many minutes he plays. Keep that in mind when making your pick.
Giannis Antetokounmpo, Milwaukee Bucks: +650
If Giannis Antetokounmpo plays, oddsmakers being so high on him will be validated. Aside from not having a consistent three-point shot, his game is tailor-made for getting out in transition, which is the name of the game when All-Stars are shining bright.
Joel Embiid, Philadelphia 76ers: +650
Joel Embiid doesn’t feel like your typical top-three favorite for MVP, but he has extra motivation after initially not being named a starter.
If you’ve watched Embiid play, you know he likes to have fun on the court. Nothing would be more fun for him than throwing down six or seven dunks, hitting a couple threes, blocking a couple unsuspecting guards at the rim and earning an MVP trophy on Sunday.
Damian Lillard, Portland Trail Blazers: +750
In the slightly altered words of Jacobim Mugatu: Damian Lillard is so hot right now.
The Portland Trail Blazers guard won back-to-back Western Conference Player of the Week awards before Shai Gilgeous-Alexander snagged the most recent, and he’s one of the only healthy starters on a team scraping for play-in and postseason contention.
Furthermore, we’ve seen Dame go off in this game before. Don’t be surprised if it happens again.
Kyrie Irving, Dallas Mavericks: +750
Kyrie Irving is a total wild card here. He may show up and show out in an attempt to get the focus back on his otherworldly basketball skills. Conversely, he may decide to not take a single shot in some sort of protest during his vacation from competitive hoops. Who knows?
Nothing about Irving has been predictable this season. If you’re feeling the high-risk, high-reward approach to All-Star Sunday, this could be the play.

If LeBron looks as motivated as I think he’ll look in this one, he should pick the more competitive team and look every bit himself in the minutes he plays.
Picking against Team LeBron in this situation feels like a gamble in and of itself. But as I said above, make sure you feel out the final roster before making your final pick.
Bonus MVP Pick: Damian Lillard +750
With both team captains potentially dealing with injuries, Lillard and his limitless range is the play for MVP.
Over his six All-Star selections, Lillard has averaged better than 18 points per game. In his most recent showing (2021), he scored 32 points and shot 8-of-16 from the three-point line, including the near-half-court heave to end the contest.
Even in All-Star Games, Lillard plays with a chip on his shoulder. He’s my pick over the wild-card Kyrie Irving, either team captain or two-way force Joel Embiid on Sunday.
