MLB Predictions – 2020 NL Pennant Handicapping Insight
Here’s a closer look at the 2020 NL Pennant.
Los Angeles Dodgers 2020 NL Pennant Predictions
Dodgers NL Pennant Odds: +140
Let’s start with the favorites. The Dodgers missed out on a third opportunity to play in the World Series after losing back-to-back Fall Classics in 2017 and 2018.
They won 106 games in the regular season, the most in the NL, and then took a 2–1 series lead over Washington in the League Division Series before the Nationals won the final two games and unceremoniously ousted the favorites.
The Dodgers went out and added Mookie Betts in the offseason to complete what looks like the outline of an all-star lineup, on paper.
That lineup should tear through the regular season (however long it is) but there has to be some concern about the drop-off some of LA’s most productive bats have seen in recent postseasons.
Cody Bellinger hasn’t been the same guy in the playoffs. Players as young as he is often aren’t. As he gains experience, he will become a more confident player in the playoffs and the Dodgers will break though.
But while LA’s starting pitching was star-studded at the front of the rotation a year ago, it was not nearly as steady in the bullpen, which has been weak for more than just last year.
The Dodgers didn’t add anybody of real significance to the bullpen but they do have some young arms coming up that may not crack the starting rotation and could take on bullpen roles in October. Think guys like Tony Gonsolin or even Dustin May, though he may be too good not to start.
This year’s starting rotation may not be as great at the top minus Hyun-Jin Ryu, who finished second in the Cy Young race a season ago. He’s in Toronto now.
Clayton Kershaw is a year older but Walker Buehler is ready to become the ace. Kershaw slides closer to the middle of the rotation now, where he will feel more comfortable.
Atlanta Braves 2020 NL Pennant Predictions
Braves NL Pennant Odds: +800
Unlike the Dodgers, who are overwhelming favorites in their division out West, Atlanta plays in what looks to be the toughest NL division.
The Braves are the favorites but Washington is just behind and both the Phillies and Mets are much more than longshots. If you’re betting Atlanta in the preseason, beware of the possibility it misses the playoffs all together if things don’t go well once the season begins.
The Braves may not have the all-star depth of the Dodgers but their front-liners are every bit as good. Ronald Acuna Jr is the MVP favorite at age 22 and Mike Soroka broke out in his first full regular season at 21/22.
To me, the middle infield is key. Ozzie Albies and Dansby Swanson aren’t that old that Braves fans shouldn’t be hopeful they can’t break out but patience is on the verge of starting to run a bit thin.
Chicago Cubs 2020 NL Pennant Predictions
Cubs NL Pennant Odds: +1200
The Cubs have a new manager and a new feel in the clubhouse as they try to rekindle some of the 2016 magic with much of the same roster.
David Ross has earned rave reviews in the early days of his managerial job. He has Kris Bryant feeling comfortable and confident, something he wasn’t under Joe Maddon. He will hit leadoff with Anthony Rizzo right after him.
There will be no easing into games for the opposing starting pitcher.
Javy Baez and Willson Contreras remain in the lineup as two of the other stars from the 2016 team. Kyle Schwarber will likely play left field, unless Ross decides to prioritize defense more often and use Schwarber’s big bat in one pinch-hit spot per game.
Then there’s a bit of a youth movement. Nico Hoerner will get a lot of time on the infield, whether at short, second or third; David Bote will continue to play more of an every-day role at either second or third; and Ian Happ will be the main man in center field.
The starting pitching is on the older side but if there’s a year it may be able to thrive in its older age, it may just be one with a shortened regular season. Yu Darvish is surging in Cy Young markets after his stellar end to 2019.
If Jon Lester can keep up and be a co-ace, the Cubs can take this one all the way.

CappersPicks.com 2020 NL Pennant Predictions: Cubs +1200 (Free Pick)
It’s tough to bet the Dodgers at +140. So which team is it going to be to upset them?
Give me Chicago. It has left and right-handed stars in the lineup and an experienced staff that will have extra rest and fewer innings to complete in the regular year. Plus, you can’t beat the price with any other contender.
