MLB Predictions – 2020 Baseball Handicapping Insight
If they are not willing to pursue this option, it’s becoming harder to see them playing the 2020 season at all.
Markets are still accepting bets on MLB futures, however. Team futures are available, as are player props. In this article we will examine the home run market and the best buys to lead the league in long balls.
Last season saw a record number of home runs across the league.
The Minnesota Twins set an all-time record with 307 home runs and the Yankees finished with just one less, despite missing Aaron Judge for two months and Giancarlo Stanton for just about the entire season.
2020 Most Home Runs Betting Odds – Pete Alonso +1000
Pete Alonso led the league with 53 homers, set the single-season rookie record and became the fourth rookie since 1906 to lead the Major Leagues in dingers (Ralph Kiner, Mark McGwire, Aaron Judge).
No one else hit 50. Five guys finished between 44 and 49: Eugenio Suarez (49), Jorge Soler (48), Cody Bellinger (47), Mike Trout (45) and Christian Yelich (44), who missed the last three weeks of his MVP race with Bellinger.
The next tier of last year’s sluggers starts with Alex Bregman, who hit 41.
Of the six players who hit at least 44, Alonso (10/1) is the highest priced, followed by Trout (11/1) and Bellinger (14/1). Yelich (18/1) is between them and the two underdogs of the group: Suarez (20/1) and Soler (25/1).
2020 Most Home Runs Betting Odds – Jorge Soler +2500
After playing in just over 300 games in his first five seasons between the Cubs and Royals, Soler played all 162 in 2019 and quadrupled his career-high, from 12 home runs up to 48.
He led the American League with 178 strikeouts but lowered his K:BB ratio and at just 28 year old, he’s still getting better.
2020 Most Home Runs Betting Odds – Eugenio Suarez +2000
Suarez led the National League with 189 punch-outs but he hit more home runs than the year before for the fifth time in a row, which is to say his entire career.
He’ll have more protection in Cincinnati’s lineup but that probably won’t mean homers. He hit a bunch of them last season because he came up so often with the bases empty in a game the Reds were trailing.
Opponents went right at him, which they’re not likely to do as often now.
Playing for a bad team can be both either an advantage or a disadvantage when it comes to raw numbers. One one hand, a slugger who hits in a bad lineup without much protection will get pitched around a lot.
On the other, pitchers are more aggressive with the bases empty because the solo home run isn’t something to fear, especially with a big lead.
2020 Most Home Runs Betting Odds – Joey Gallo +800
Joey Gallo might be the highest-priced bet at 8/1 to lead the league but not only does he have the most prodigious raw power in the game, he plays for a team that will be behind often and fail to put men on base for his at-bats.
The only real concern with Gallo is his health.
He had a couple of tough injuries last season but he’s 100 percent healthy going into 2020 and a shorter-length season will only increase the possibility that he doesn’t miss any time at all.
