Handicapping MLB Props
MLB PropsHey there! Have you stopped by CappersPicks.com today looking for 2020 MLB Hit Leader Prop Betting Odds & Free Picks? Congratulations, you’re in the right place! Last season, Whit Merrifield of the Kansas City Royals led the Major Leagues with 206 hits. He played in all 162 games, hit at or near the top of the lineup and didn’t particularly care to walk.
MLB Predictions – 2020 Handicapping Insight
Even better, he is not much of a power hitter, which means he has to hit for a high average to be an asset.
Other than Merrifield, only Rafael Devers of the Boston Red Sox had more than 200 hits in 2019. Devers was the best hitter in all of baseball for roughly the last two months of the season and finished with a .311 average, even with prodigious power numbers (32 home runs).
In identifying the future hit leader, all the above mentioned factors are important: health and durability, a spot near the top of a lineup and a tendency to swing rather than take walks. It helps if the candidate is not going to swing for the fences.
Below is a list of the top favorites to lead the Major Leagues in hits this abbreviated 2020 season via our recommended sportsbooks:
Full 2020 MLB Hit Leader Prop Betting Odds
- Jose Altuve +1200
- Nolan Arenado +1200
- Whit Merrifield +1200
- Rafael Devers +1300
- DJ LaMahieu +1500
- Francisco Lindor +1500
- Ketel Marte +1500
- Ozzie Albies +2000
- Trea Turner +2000
- Tim Anderson +2200
- Xander Bogaerts +2200
- Jeff McNeil +2200
- Jorge Polanco +2200
- Jean Segura +2200
- Christian Yelich +2200
- Mookie Betts +2500
- Freddie Freeman +2500
Jose Altuve led the league in hits four consecutive seasons but he failed to record 150 for the first time as a full-time starter in 2019. Injuries slowed him down, as did a greater tendency to take a walk. Still, he failed to hit .300 for the first time since 2013.
Though he’s never led the league in hits, Nolan Arenado has averaged over 181 hits per season over the last five years. His walk numbers are trending up, ever so slowly, however. A big plus with Arenado is durability; he hasn’t missed more than seven games in any of the last five seasons but if he hasn’t led the league yet, perhaps it will never happen.
Ozzie Albies led the NL last season with 189 hits. He’s a switch-hitter and therefore stays in the lineup and does not like to walk. He used to hit up top of Atlanta’s lineup but slid down last season. If he regains a spot between Ronald Acuna and Freddie Freeman, he’s an intriguing play at 20/1.
A similar player in the AL, Jorge Polanco hits on both sides and doesn’t like to walk; nor do pitchers like to walk him near the top of a fearsome Minnesota lineup. Watch out for Luis Arraez too, who had 109 hits in just 92 games as a rookie last season. Much depend on where each guy will slot into Rocco Baldelli’s lineup.
Andrew Benintendi topped out at 168 hits in 2018 but he doesn’t struggle terribly against left-handed pitchers and is a candidate to replace Mookie Betts at the top of Boston’s lineup. If he does, pitchers will be careful not to pitch around him. He doesn’t hit for a ton of power so might as well make him hit his way on with Devers and Xander Bogaerts coming up behind him. At 75/1, Benny is a buy.
The other guy I’m in on is Tim Anderson at 22/1. He would have led the league last season if not for a sprained ankle on a soggy Fenway Park infield. He still finished the season with enough at-bats to win the batting title with a .335 mark and he’ll hit up top of an improved Chicago lineup.

So much depends on health but I’m banking on the last two names mentioned: Benintendi and Anderson, one as a long-shot and the other as an undervalued favorite.
