LeBron James is set to enter the 2018-19 campaign as the leader for MVP, but there are two newcomers to the discussion who will be right behind him.
We’ll highlight the top three players in terms of odds, and we’ll also give you two sleepers to keep an eye on.
2018 NBA MVP Handicapping Odds: LeBron James (10/3)
The MVP race is part about production and part about narrative. LeBron James will have both on his side.

Although we talk about LeBron as someone who could win it every year, the truth is that he doesn’t because of voter fatigue. That won’t happen this year, as his shakeup and move to Los Angeles will be all folks need to lose any thought of “we’ve seen this before.”
James is going to be his usual superstar self but this time without a true second option available. If he can lead the young (and misfit) Lakers to home-court advantage in the playoffs, the MVP will be his to lose.
2018 NBA MVP Handicapping Odds: Anthony Davis (4/1)
The New Orleans Pelicans are slated to take a small step backward this season, which is why this placement for Anthony Davis is even more impressive than it looks on the surface. Winning is a huge component to winning the MVP award, so to be named the favorite behind LeBron when your team is likely to struggle making the postseason is a big deal.

AD is the kind of player who is going to dominate above the rim and beyond the arc. And he’s going to do the same on the point-preventing side of the court as well.
In a league full of unicorns, Davis might be the OG.
If his Pelicans can come together and defy the odds this season, it will be large in part due to Anthony’s dominance, and it will be what he needs to take home the league’s most prestigious individual hardware.
2018 NBA MVP Handicapping Odds: Giannis Antetokounmpo (9/2)
Giannis Antetokounmpo needs a jumper. This we know.
But that’s literally all he needs.
If The Greek Greek can establish a three-point shot this season (or any time in the next two to three years), he’s going to own the NBA. He doesn’t need a jumper to necessarily win MVP this season, as his stat-stuffing ways will earn him plenty of votes. But if he happens to find one? Game over.
2018 NBA MVP Handicapping Odds: Kawhi Leonard (+11/1)
Remember when we said narratives played a big role in MVP voting? See: Kawhi Leonard.

Kawhi currently sits in sixth in terms of MVP odds, and part of that is because he’s now playing for the No. 1 team in the East from last season. The MVP is a regular-season award, so really, the Raptors have no choice but to maintain their status atop the conference to help Leonard in voting. Any step back would be disastrous.
All that said, if the Raptors can win the East and Kawhi is the clear-cut best player in the conference, the storylines surrounding his comeback from injury will be huge.
Keep an eye on this player—and this team—throughout the year.
2018 NBA MVP Handicapping Odds: Joel Embiid (16/1)/Ben Simmons (35/1)
Okay, we lied. We have three total sleepers to share, but these two really have to be combined into one.
The two stars of the Philadelphia 76ers are ninth (Embiid) and 11th (Simmons) in terms of best odds, but they’ll rise together throughout the year if Philly looks like the best team out East.
The two will steal votes from each other, which makes it tough to pick one over the other. But if either player takes a legitimate step up from their excellent 2017-18 seasons, they’ll also be tough to ignore altogether.
