For bettors interested in backing one of the wild card teams to win it all, there’s value to be found in parlaying a one-game playoff with the remainder of the postseason, so those interested in backing one of the Blue Jays, Orioles, Giants, and Mets, need to act quickly.
Here’s a closer look at five playoff teams from a gambling perspective.
Chicago Cubs +240
The Cubs have just about been the wire-to-wire favorite to win the World Series despite decades of struggles in that department.
The team is loaded with a potent lineup, an intimidating starting rotation, a deep and effective bullpen, and maybe the best manager in baseball.
The Cubbies can’t afford for their hitters not to get off to a hot start to the playoffs, as they’ll meet either the Giants or Mets in a short series in the divisional round, where pitching could dictate the winner each and every night.

If they’re able to get to the World Series, they have enough offense to keep up with any American League team, and elite pitchers who’ve proven capable of stifling the bats in the junior circuit.
Boston Red Sox +525
The Red Sox looked like they’d roll into the postseason as a team with all the offense in the world, but not enough pitching to supplement that group. That isn’t exactly the case, as Rick Porcello and David Price showed down the stretch that they’re a good 1-2 punch at the front end of the rotation.
The team gets a lucky draw in the divisional round in a Cleveland squad that’s limping into the playoffs with some injuries to prominent members of a once elite rotation.
Boston’s got the hitting to power itself to a fourth World Series win in 13 years.
Texas Rangers +575
The Rangers took a very good Blue Jays team to a deciding fifth game a year ago despite being a shadow of what the team is now.
Adrian Beltre was playing on one leg, Prince Fielder was a hole in the middle of the order, and Yu Darvish was still recovering from Tommy John surgery.
This time around, the Rangers have the band back together. Beltre’s healthy, Fielder’s out of the picture, and Darvish is the ace the rotation needs.
A repeat performance against the Blue Jays could be in store for the Rangers, as the team will face the winner of Tuesday night’s wild card showdown between Toronto and Baltimore.
Toronto Blue Jays +1000
The Blue Jays are built to win now, and win Tuesday night they’ll have to if they’re going to remain in the playoff picture.
The team got off to a slow start to the postseason a year ago when they lost their first two games to the Rangers, and they can’t afford that kind of start to this year’s playoffs.
The Jays have a potent lineup that may not be as good as it is now for quite some time with both Edwin Encarnacion and Jose Bautista set to test the free agent waters.

The starting pitching can hold up if John Gibbons lines his arms up right, but the bullpen is a major question mark.
San Francisco Giants +1200
It’s an odd numbered year, so the Giants are worth a look. Madison Bumgarner is still around to anchor the rotation, and there’s enough offense on the field to supplement an uncharacteristically shallow starting rotation.
Manager Bruce Bochy knows what to say and do this time of year, and while he may not have the kind of talent on his roster that he’s used to, he’s the guy you want at the controls if you’re looking to maximize the output from this group.
