A matchup of two Pacific Division teams sees the 3rd place Edmonton Oilers head to Glendale, Arizona to take on the 7th place Coyotes.
Edmonton Oilers
The month of December has been tough on the Edmonton Oilers so far. At 5-2-3, the Oilers have seen six of those 10 games go to an overtime period or shootout. As good as this team can be, it has not been easy closing out games recently.
After a four-game losing streak that saw three of the four head to extra time, the Oilers have bounced back, winning three of their last four. That’s the good news.

The bad news is that the offensive production has been down recently. In the last five, the Oilers have just 12 total goals. This can be attributed to a bit of a slump for key players like Connor McDavid (0G, 2A in last five games), Ryan Nugent-Hopkins (2G, 0A) and Milan Lucic (1G, 1A).
Fortunately, center Leon Draisaitl continues to improve and has been great in December. He has two goals and three assists over the last five games.
Through 34 games, the Oilers have 100 goals (2.94 goals per game). However, they have just 12 in the last five (2.4 per game). This average will need to climb back up to around three in order to close out more games and avoid so many overtime periods.
Arizona Coyotes
There’s no way to spin it. Arizona is just not a good hockey team. With just 11 wins all year – 3 in December – the Coyotes are poor on both sides of the ice.
The team ranks 28th in goals for (72) and 28th in goals against (101) which equates to a minus-27 goal differential on the year. It’s hard to win against any team when you average 2.25 goals per game but give up 3.15 per game.
There hasn’t been much home ice advantage for Arizona either. At 6-6-2 in Glendale this year, the Coyotes have not had much good fortune.

Speaking of not much good fortune, it hasn’t helped that a key player like Dave Bolland was sidelined with back and ankle injuries before the year even began and has yet to see the ice.
Add in a trip to the injured reserve list for left winger Max Domi, the potential future of the franchise, and it’s just been nothing but bad news for Arizona.
To beat the Oilers, it will take a complete effort on both offense and defense, some missed opportunities from Edmonton, and probably a bit of good fortune as well.
NHL Betting Trends:
- The UNDER is 4-0-1 in Edmonton’s last five games
- Arizona is 6-6-2 at home this season
