The Seattle Seahawks travel to FedEx Field to take on the Washington Football Team in a week 15 matchup between playoff contenders. Seattle is coming off a blowout win over the Jets and Washington just won their fourth straight game after beating San Francisco.
Seattle Seahawks
Seattle scored 40 unanswered points after giving up a game opening field goal to the Jets in week 14. It was almost a picture perfect bounce-back game for Pete Carroll and the Seahawks following their loss to the New York Giants. Each game matters as they are still battling with the Rams for the NFC West division title.
Despite falling out of the MVP race, Russell Wilson is still one of the best quarterbacks in the NFL. While he has had a few rough games and turned the ball over more than he’s accustomed to, he appears to be back on track and is making some incredible throws. Wilson has completed 70.4% of his passes for 3685 yards with 36 touchdowns to 12 interceptions.
Wilson is always a threat when throwing to his two feature weapons D.K. Metcalf and Tyler Lockett. Metcalf is one of the NFL’s biggest rising stars. The 6-foot-4 230 pound Receiver has proven to be one of the most freakish athletes in the league. He ranks second in the league with 1,180 receiving yards, and third with 17.1 average yards per reception. He presents a matchup challenge for any defense. Lockett is also an elite receiver, and has made teams pay when failing to account for him.
Chris Carson leads the Seattle rushing attack with 505 yards and five rushing touchdowns while averaging an impressive 5.1 yards per carry. The offense has been a different offense since his return from a foot injury. Carlos Hyde is the other half of Seattle’s one-two punch in the backfield.
Seattle’s defense has tightened up after a bad start to the year. The return of some key players from injury as well as the acquisition of pass rusher Carlos Dunlap has spurred the improvement. The return of top cornerback Shaquill Griffin has bolstered the pass defense, and the return of Jamal Adams can’t be understated. Adams is a high-energy utility player that changes the makeup of Seattle’s defense. He broke the NFL single-season record for sacks by a defensive back against his former team on Sunday. He sacked Sam Darnold to push his season total to 8.5 sacks, surpassing the previous record of 8.
This is not the same Seattle defense that we saw at the beginning of the season. They have allowed a measly 12.3 points per game over their last three games, the best of any team in that span.
Washington Football Team
The Washington was able to eke out a win over the San Francisco 49ers despite a lackluster offensive performance. They got the win and pushed their winning streak to four games, but it was not a pretty performance. They relied on two defensive touchdowns to pull out the 23-15 win.
Alex Smith appears to be the undeniable comeback player of the year. After suffering a life-threatening leg injury over two years ago, the quarterback was told it was unlikely that he would ever play football again. Smith has not only returned to the football field, but is leading his team through a division title race. He has still struggled a bit, completing 66.4% while throwing four touchdowns to six interceptions.
Smith is dealing with a calf strain and may not be available on Sunday. If he is unable to go, Dwayne Haskins would make the start at quarterback.
One of the drivers of Washington’s recent success has come from their success on the ground. However, their lead running back Antonio Gibson may miss his second straight game due to a turf toe injury. If Gibson can’t suit up, J.D. McKissic and Peyton Barber would share the load in the backfield.
Washington’s defense has continued to play well. Rookie phenom Chase Young has led a tough defensive front that has gotten after opposing quarterbacks. The Football Team ranks 6th in scoring defense, allowing 21.2 points per game. They are top-four in passing yards allowed (206.3) and sacks per game (3.1).
NFL Betting Trends:
- SEA is 5-2-2 ATS in their last 9 games in Week 15.
- Washington is 4-14 SU in their last 18 games at home.
- The favorite is 5-2-1 ATS in the last 8 head-to-head meetings.
4* Free NFL Betting Prediction: Seattle -5
Seattle’s high-octane offense has been one of the best in the NFL all season. They got back on track and were firing on all cylinders in a 40 point performance on Sunday. With Chris Carson in the backfield this offense is more balanced and Russell Wilson doesn’t have to carry all the weight.
Poor defensive play is what was holding the Seahawks back early in the season, but that has not been the case of late. Seattle’s defense has is playing much better and has allowed a league best 12.3 points per game over their last three.
Washington’s offense struggled mightily last week and could be without both their starting quarterback and starting running back. Even if Smith and Gibson are both able to play, this offense doesn’t have enough to keep up with Seattle’s offense. I’ll back the Seahawks to cover.
