Seattle returned to winning ways with a dominant win over the Chargers and host a Giants squad that just keeps winning.
Seattle took control of the NFC West on Sunday with their win and is firmly in the conference’s playoff picture. That would be a shock to preseason us, but we know better by now. They’ve done it on the back of their offense, which has been prolific enough to mask all of the defensive issues they have.
New York is being spoiled by their football teams right now and the Giants are leading that charge. At 6-1, everyone is shocked and it lends proof that coaching does in fact matter. Big Blue is somewhat of an opposite to the Seahawks as they let their defense do most of the heavy lifting while the offense does just enough.
Who will take advantage of their matchup edge?
Seattle Seahawks
Kenneth Walker was the story of the game on Sunday, owning the backfield with 23 carries, 168 yards and two touchdowns, including a 74 yard house call. It was a change from the pass-dependent offense they normally field, but Geno still added two touchdowns with both going to Marquise Goodwin.
DVOA still loves Seattle and it’s not surprising. They’ve been an equal opportunity offense to all teams this season, hanging an average of 26 ppg on their opponents. EPA still favors their passing attack (5th) over their rushing performances (14th) but Kenneth Walker proved that number may be rising.
Seattle dodged a bullet with DK Metcalf’s injury being non-season-ending but he won’t be available for the next few weeks at best. That leaves pass catching duties to a combination of Lockett, Goodwin and Dissly, something the Giants’ 26th-ranked passing defense will welcome. The Giants defense mostly wins by presenting exotic fronts and dialing up pressure, something that Geno has excelled against.
Playing the Giants means prepping your defense to stop the run. Seattle will need to improve on their 18th EPA/rush allowed mark if they hope to control Barkley and win the possession game. Tariq Woolen has morphed into superstar corner but the Giants don’t have a go-to receiver, so it’ll be interesting to see how they deploy him.
New York Giants
Daniel Jones took the game into his hands on Sunday with Jacksonville committing to stopping the run. His legs were just as important as ever and he rushed for over 100 yards. Barkley was effectively shut out in the first half, but made a surge in the second half, which has been fairly common this season.
Wan’Dale Robinson led the team in targets with 8, in a full snap load. I would expect him to be heavily featured again, also with Darius Slayton, who is becoming increasingly important to the offense. His 31 yard touchdown grab on the opening drive was one of few 20+ yard plays the offense has posted this year.
Whether Kadarius Toney ever contributes to this team remains to be seen and Daniel Bellinger heading to IR is a bigger deal than it may seem to a team that’s 8th in passing offense by DVOA. Mike Kafka has done a good job making chicken salad from chicken you-know-what so it’s hard to get too down on the Giants.
The matchup of this game to me is the Giants’ pressure vs. Geno Smith. Wink Martindale doesn’t change his strategy too much, so even with Smith’s sterling numbers the Giants will bring the heat. Kayvon Thibodeaux has been increasingly noteworthy on defensive snaps, but may struggle to get pressure on Seattle’s rookie tackles that are 14th and 22nd in pass block win rate, respectively.

At 6-1, the Giants’ demise has been predicted every week for about a month now, and they come into this one as underdogs yet again. It’s true, they’ve been one of the luckiest teams in the NFL and their hot run in one score games is likely to end soon, but they played their most complete game Sunday against the Jaguars.
Seattle’s offense is the best unit the Giants will have seen all year. Between the success of their tackles and Geno’s unflappable nature under pressure, the Giants ace might be trumped here. New York doesn’t have a particularly explosive offense, so if they get down early, it’s hard to see how they keep pace.
The spread is attributed to home field advantage here, so Vegas sees these two teams as equal. I hate to fade the Giants, but this might finally be the week they see some regression to the mean.
