Geno Smith takes to the road after a career revitalizing win as the Seahawks starter. The 49ers meanwhile would settle for not playing on a slip n’ slide.
San Francisco 49ers
It’s hard to glean much from the 49ers performance due to the conditions the game was played in. In an absolute Chicago deluge, the speed was entirely neutralized, allowing the Bears to deliver an upset win.
Trey Lance was most effective running the ball, posting 13 carries for 54 yards. Some nice throws of his are floating around the internet post week 1, but overall it was a tough passing day for Lance, including a key interception to Eddie Jackson. I won’t be too critical though.
The biggest news for the Niners is the loss of Elijah Mitchell due to a sprained MCL. Early reports have Mitchell missing the next few months which means it’s now the Jeff Wilson show with RB1 status. Really though, we’ll be seeing plenty of Deebo Samuel and that should be less of a drop off.
The 49ers limited the Bears to 2.7 ypc in this slogfest. Nick Bosa still managed a sack and we can expect plenty more.
For the most part however, we’re still working off of preseason expectations for San Francisco.
Seattle Seahawks
Geno Smith, welcome back fella! Though he had some starting duties after Russell Wilson left with a hand injury last year, this is the first year Geno gets the keys to the car. After flaming out as the Jets purported savior, he’s redeemed himself nicely and continued with a win on ESPN’s Monday Night Football.
Advanced metrics also liked Smith’s performance, crediting him with +0.26 EPA/play, ranking 8th among all QB’s in Week 1. He even showed some great awareness, connecting with Will Dissly for a 38 yard score after the defense seemingly forgot about him.
Rashaad Penny ran hard but the Broncos looked stout in the run game. Outside of a 26 yard scamper, he was held to 3.1 ypc on 11 carries. Seattle will be champing at the bit to get Kenneth Walker back from injury. No single receiver dominated the game, but DK Metcalf (7 rec, 36 yards) was given the most opportunities with 7 targets.
Uchenna Nwosu was the star of the night, posting 7 tackles, 1 sack, 1 TFL and 1 PD. Unfortunately for the Seahawks, early reports today indicate Jamal Adams will likely miss the rest of the season after sustaining a quad injury. I worry for the Seattle secondary, which relies on corners Sidney Jones, Tariq Woolen and rookie Coby Bryant. Quandre Diggs will have his hands full.

4* Free Week 2 NFL Betting Prediction: Seahawks +10
Seattle just got up emotionally upon Russ’ return and they were fortunate to end the game with a win, for a multitude of reasons. In my estimation, the Seahawks should be 0-1 in about three separate instances in this game.
The 49ers suffered a weird loss on the road in what will likely be the worst conditions we see all season. Still, I need to see more of Trey Lance before I really know what he is.
In a divisional game with less information than I’d like, give me the points. I liked what the Seahawks put out there and 10 points is a lot to ask the Niners to cover.
