The San Francisco 49ers return to their home away from home after delivering a gift-wrapped game to the Cowboys including a stocking stuffed full of turnovers.
The Arizona Cardinals kept their momentum going with a win over a challenging Jalen Hurts-led Eagles squad. That is two in a row after having lost their way with three losses in a row previously.
The Cardinals are in a favorable match in this must-win game and should hold onto the seventh playoff spot in the NFC.
San Francisco 49ers
The San Francisco 49ers had high hopes at the start of the season but mounting injuries, north of 20 at one point in the year, damaged their expectations. Also, they lost to these Arizona Cardinals 24-20 in week one.
Now the 49ers visit a place they know very well – State Farm Stadium in Glendale, Arizona. This site has been the 49ers’ de factor home field several times over the course of the year and should provide a bit of normalcy ahead of this match up.
Another bit of normalcy for the 49ers is that QB Nick Mullens will continue to stay under center as Jimmy Garoppolo is expected to stay on the IR. Mullens is 2-5 filling in for Garoppolo.
With RB Raheem Mostert leaving last week’s game after spending some time on the injury report prior, I do not expect the team to exceed their rushing average during this game. Nick Mullens must limit his mistakes for the 49ers to have any chance of victory and should be able to find success against a defense that just allowed over 300 yards to rookie Jalen Hurts.
Arizona Cardinals
Jumping out to a 16-0 lead in the first quarter against the rookie-led Philadelphia Eagles was almost not enough to get a victory out of Glendale last week. Yet, the Arizona Cardinals defended against two end zone passes for the win and creep closer to a playoff birth.
Arizona has gone 2-3 over their last five games with many suggesting QB Kyler Murray’s been protecting his injured shoulder by not running as much, which is a strong part of the Cardinals’ offensive versatility. While Murray only rushed for 29 yards, he passed for 406 yards and three touchdowns and one interception.
Arizona needs to return to their versatility to be successful. Murray rushed for 91 yards in the first matchup with the 49ers, which was the difference in their win. They need to make that difference up if Murray continues to not bring in rushing yards.
WR DeAndre Hopkins had another terrific game with 169 receiving yards. He is a consistent threat on the outside for Murray and should stretch the 49er defense enough to allow RB Kenyan Drake to make up some Murray’s missing rushing yards.
NFL Betting Trends:
- San Francisco is 1-6 ATS in their last 7 games.
- San Francisco is 0-5-1 ATS in their last 6 games against Arizona.
- Arizona is 5-1 SU in their last 6 games when playing at home against San Francisco.
- Arizona is 4-1 ATS in their last 5 games played in week 16.
4* Free NFL Betting Prediction: Arizona -3.5
The Cardinals have to win to stay in the playoff hunt. While the Cardinals let the Eagles get back into the game and give up over 300 yards passing while doing so, they may have more success defending against Mullens than Jalen Hurts.
San Francisco’s four turnover performance does not inspire a lot of confidence that they can get things turned around on a short week on top of now being eliminated from the playoffs. The Cardinals as I said need the W to stay in the playoff hunt, so I suspect they will capitalize on a few of Mullen’s miscues and cover.
