The Jets, staying within the wild and unexpected 2020 happenings, are going for their third win in a row. They were able to hold the rushing-oriented Browns to 45 rushing yards and would like to keep that momentum against the New England Patriots.
The Patriots are coming off the losing end of a blowout on Monday Night Football to the Buffalo Bills. They desperately need to get the offense tweaked on a short week to avoid losing four in a row.
These teams met November 9th in East Rutherford, New Jersey. The Patriots needed a 13-point fourth quarter to win 30-27.
New York Jets
The New York Jets have won two of their last three since firing their defensive coordinator, Gregg Williams. While they were blown out by the Seattle Seahawks in Frank Bush’s first game as defensive coordinator, they have since schemed well against the Los Angeles Rams and Cleveland Browns. Limiting the Cleveland Browns to 45 rushing yards is an exceptional feat. Nick Chubb was held to 28 yards.
The Jets’ offense is last in the league in most offensive metrics and only average 15.3 points per game. QB Sam Darnold had a good game against the Browns throwing two touchdowns and no interceptions. His main target, WR Jamison Crowder, brought in 92 receiving yards. The offense was efficient and mistake free, which is refreshing considering Darnold’s upside down TD:INT of 8:9.
New England Patriots
The Patriots are trending in the wrong direction. Some could argue the Patriots currently have one of the least talented offensive rosters in the NFL at the moment. Over their last three games, the New England Patriots have scored only 24 points. Cam Newton has been benched due to some production deficiencies and the offense just looks lost. Over the recent three-game losing streak, Cam Newton has thrown no TD passes and has thrown one interception.
The defense did not do very much versus Josh Allen and the Buffalo Bills but the Jets are not the Bills. The Patriots’ defense has been league average over most of the year but is just outside the top 10 in points per game. Coach Belichick can still scheme and slow teams down enough to give his offense a chance to grind a win and it is very doable against a bad Jets’ offense.
NFL Betting Trends:
- Jets are 5-2 ATS in their last 7 games.
- Jets are 2-4 ATS in their last 6 games against New England.
- Patriots are 4-8 ATS in their last 12 games.
- Patriots are 9-0 SU in their last 9 games when playing at home against the Jets.
4* Free NFL Betting Prediction: Jets +3.5
Both teams have significant issues and nothing to play for. The Jets are putting effort into their games and exited the Trevor Lawrence tank-a-thon, so I expect them to continue grinding in this game.
Neither offense should light up the scoreboard. There is a high likelihood Jarret Stidham may get significant playing time assuming he does not start. Stidham has not been impressive with a 50% completion percentage and a TD:INT of 2:3 in his limited replacement of Cam Newton.
The Jets’ defense gives up a very small .1 yard per play less than the Patriots, so the game is going to come down to the offenses. Whatever mistakes Belichick can get Darnold to make and assuming Darnold doesn’t have another four interception game like he had against the Patriots like he did in 2019, I think there is a good chance it will be washed out by either of the Patriots’ options.
I do not think the Patriots’ offense can be trusted especially with the potential of this game being a testing ground for Stidham. I’ll take anything +3.0 or more with the Jets.
