This week 9 matchup at FedExField features two teams with first-year head coaches that are near the bottom of the league. The New York Giants and Washington Football Team have combined for 3 wins, but both are coming off of promising performances.
Despite losing a close game against the Buccaneers, the Giants played well and were in a position to win until the final play. Washington played their best game of the year in a dominant 25-3 win over the Dallas Cowboys.
New York Giants
While it feels unlikely that either of these teams make a run to the playoffs, this is an important clash in an NFC East that is still up for grabs. This is a must win for the Giants if they hope to retain any chance to contend for a playoff berth. They are coming in on short rest following their Monday Night Football matchup, while Washington is coming off a bye week.
New York turned some heads against Tom Brady and the red hot Buccaneers. Daniel Jones and the Giants racked up a season high 357 yards and 23 points against Tampa Bay’s top-10 defensive unit. Jones threw for 256 yards and two touchdowns, but threw two costly 2nd half interceptions.
While he has shown flashes of promise and the ability to overcome adversity, he has also been vulnerable to mistakes. He has thrown nine interceptions, behind only Kirk Cousins and Carson Wentz. The Giants will need him to play with confidence and take care of the football.
The Giants hope to get running back Devonta Freeman back from an ankle injury. If he can’t play the running back duties will be shared between Wayne Gallman, Dion Lewis, Alfred Morris.
New York’s defense turned in an equally impressive performance on Monday Night.
They held the league’s 4th best scoring offense to 25 points and gave their offense a chance to send the game to overtime. While they rank poorly in points allowed per game, they have been tough against the run allowing 102 yards per game.
Washington Football Team
Washington snapped a five-game losing streak in their drubbing of Dallas. It was an impressive win, but the Cowboys have been arguably the worst team in the NFL as of late. Despite their underwhelming start, they are currently projected to be the second most likely team to win the NFC East, behind the Philadelphia Eagles.
Washington’s offense has faced plenty of adversity in the 2020 campaign. There have been questions surrounding the real motive behind Ron Rivera’s decision to bench first round pick Dwayne Haskins in favor of Kyle Allen. Allen has played like a game manager, and has not lit up the stat sheet.
He has thrown four touchdowns, one interception, and lost one fumble over three starts. They have been anything but an explosive offense, and only managed to score 25 points against a Cowboys defense that is on pace to be one of the worst in NFL history. Antonio Gibson has emerged as the Football Team’s feature running back.
While he rushed for 128 yards and a touchdown against Dallas, he will be up against a Giants defense that is top 10 against the run.
Washington has showed some strengths on the defensive side of the ball. They are allowing 23.6 points per game and feature a strong pass rush. The front led by Defensive Rookie of the Year candidate Chase Young is averaging 3.1 sacks per game, which is good for 5th best in the NFL.

4* Free NFL Betting Prediction: Giants +3
The Giants are coming in on short rest while Washington has had an extra week to prepare and recover, but they are 1-6 ATS in their last 7 games following a bye week. The Giants are 4-0 ATS in their last 4 games as an underdog, and 7-0 in their last 7 road games.
New York won the first matchup between these two teams straight up, and played one of their better games of the season last week. If Daniel Jones is able to avoid mistakes and take care fo the football they have a good chance to win this game outright.
Games between struggling divisional opponents tend to be close, I’ll take points with the Giants.
