Two teams struggling this season will meet in the first week of December. New England is looking to go on a late run to try and sneak into the playoffs, while the Chargers can finish .500 at best to end the year.
It is not normal to see the Patriots play this bad, but they have the opportunity to take down another below average team here.
New England Patriots
The Patriots actually got a win in week 12, beating the Arizona Cardinals 20-17. To no surprise, Cam Newton struggled again, throwing for just 84 yards, no touchdowns and two interceptions. Newton has had issues all season turning the ball over, so expect this to not change against the Chargers.
New England ranks 22md in total offense this season, 29th in passing offense, but 5th in rushing offense. They also score just 20.8 points per game, which ranks 27th in the league.
Defensively, the Patriots have still for the most part played decent. They held the Cardinals to 298 total yards and kept Kyler Murray in check. Murray did not throw a touchdown and had 170 yards plus one interception.
The New England defense ranks 16th in total yards allowed, 14th in passing yards allowed, 21st in rushing yards allowed, but 12th in points allowed. The Chargers do have several key options at running back, so look for the Patriots to force Justin Herbert to beat them with his arm.
Los Angeles Chargers
The Chargers lost to Buffalo in week 12, which officially means they cannot have a winning season. Though this is a better team than their record would indicate, they just have dealt with a ton of injuries. They welcomed back Austin Eckler at running back, who had 44 yards rushing and 86 yards receiving in his return from injury. Herbert threw for 316 yards in this game, but had just one touchdown and one interception.
Los Angeles ranks 4th in total offense, 2nd in passing offense and 13th in rushing offense. They score 25.2 points per game as well.
The Chargers’ defense ranks 12 in total yards, 10th in passing yards allowed and 18th against the run. They allowed the Bills to 332 total yards, but 172 rushing yards. Now facing a running quarterback like Newton and the Patriots, the Chargers are going to have to bulk up against the run big time.
NFL Betting Trends:
- New England are 1-4 ATS in their last 5 games on the road.
- New England are 2-4 ATS in their last 6 games against an opponent in the AFC.
4* Free NFL Betting Prediction: Los Angeles Chargers -1
This is a game where literally either team can win. Despite being 3-8, I think the Chargers have much more weapons offensively, especially with Eckler returning to the field. If Los Angeles can get Eckler heavily involved, I think they will run away with this game. Because I do not trust Cam Newton’s ball security, I am going to back the Charges as a small play.
