Tua Tagovailoa and the Miami Dolphins travel to MetLife Stadium for a week 12 divisional clash with the New York Jets. Miami is 6-4 and battling for a division title, while the Jets are the only winless team left in the NFL.
Miami Dolphins
The Dolphins have been one of the surprise teams of this 2020 campaign so far. No one expected them to play as well as they have since an 0-2 start. They have gone 6-2 since week two and have positioned themselves one game behind the Bills in the AFC East standings.
Miami has gone 3-1 since naming Tagovailoa the starting quarterback over veteran Ryan Fitzpatrick. He started hot but came back down to earth in Sunday’s 20-13 loss in Denver. After a shaky start, Brian Flores benched him in the 4th quarter in favor of Fitzpatrick. After the game Flores told the media he benched Tua because he felt Fitzpatrick gave his team the best chance to win. He has since stated that Tua will remain the starting quarterback against New York and going forward.
Tagovailoa had played well before Sunday’s setback in the Mile-High City. He has completed 61.9% of his passes for 602 yards and six touchdowns, while throwing no interceptions. While he hasn’t racked up incredulous numbers, he has not had to. Tua taken care of the football and made the made the right plays to put Miami in position to win games. He has flashed on tape and showcased the incredible talent that made him a star at Alabama.
Tua is surrounded by capable playmakers including DeVante Parker and Mike Gesicki catching passes, and Myles Gaskin and Matt Breida in the backfield.
Miami’s defense has been a cornerstone of their success. They are a top-five scoring defense allowing only 20.2 points per game. They have also forced 17 turnovers, putting them at turnover differential of +6.
New York Jets
New York has been the worst team in the NFL. There is simply no other way to put it. The hiring of Adam Gase has been widely considered a mistake, and nothing this season has suggested otherwise.
Joe Flacco has started the last four games at quarterback while Sam Darnold has recovered from a shoulder injury. While the Jets offense has put up more points in their last two games, they remain a sub-par unit. They have been the worst scoring offense in the NFL by far, averaging a dreadful 14.9 points per game. They rank last in yards per game and 31st in offensive DVOA.
The Jets are hardly any better on the defensive side of the ball. Gregg Williams’ defense ranks 31st in scoring defense, allowing 30.2 points per game. They rank 27th in total defensive DVOA and 31st against the pass. Gregg Williams is an experienced defensive coordinator, but he simply does not have the pieces to put together a top-tier defense.

4* Free NFL Betting Prediction: Dolphins -6.5
Both Tua and the Dolphin offense have favorable matchups and should be able to bounce back on Sunday. He should be able to remain comfortable in the pocket against a Jets defense that averages only 1.4 sacks per game. He will take care of the football and make enough plays lead the Jets to a comfortable win.
Regardless of who starts at quarterback for the New York, Miami should be able to limit their offensive production and points scored. Miami won a 24-0 matchup between these teams in week 6. Nothing has changed to make me think things will go any different on Sunday. I will back the Dolphins to get back on track to compete for a playoff berth.
