What makes this one so interesting is both squad’s quarterback situation.
One team’s main pivot is hurt, while the other has made his return to the gridiron.
Miami Dolphins
The Dolphins will be without starting quarterback Tua Tagovailoa after he entered concussion protocol following their loss against the Bengals. It was Miami’s first loss of the season and they had to replace him with Teddy Bridgewater after Tagovailoa was carted off.
Bridgewater completed 14 of his 23 passes for 193 yards while throwing both 1 touchdown and 1 pick. Between that outing and the short stint on the field against the Bills, he didn’t look like anything special.
That’s a cause for concern considering Miami relies heavily on their pass game with 307 yards per game in the air and are averaging fewer than 70 yards on the ground.
In their last win, which came in Week 3 against Buffalo, they put up just 41 rushing yards. So they may be swimming in deep waters without a trustworthy arm behind center.
Overall on offence, they’re averaging 24.5 points a contest and 376.3 yards, only scoring more than 21 points once in 4 games. On the other side of the ball, they are giving up 22.8 points and 414.0 total yards with 310.3 of them coming via the air. It essentially translates that while they gave up a lot, they were able to hide their insufficient defence with Tua’s talent in the pocket.
New York Jets
The 2-2 Jets are looking to string together consecutive wins together for the first time since Week 16 of the 2020 season. That’s something that is seemingly feasible against Miami when you consider the Dolphins give up over 300 passing yards a game and that the Jets are a team that likes to go the air route more often than not.
They have former second overall pick Zach Wilson back from injury after he returned in Week 4 against the Steelers. Wilson went 18 for 36 on 252 yards with 2 touchdowns and 1 pick.
Now you may be wondering about those touchdowns because he only threw one and he didn’t take it in himself, so where did the second one come from? Well, this beauty called for a double reverse on 2nd and goal and caught a 2 yard pass for the score.
Then, with his team down by 10 in the 4th quarter, he engineered a comeback that included a game winning touchdown with 16 seconds left.
New York is averaging 380.5 yards per game and 339.0 against. As with the Dolphins, they’re putting up a low dose of a ground game with just 87.5 yards a contest. Wilson has the potential to flip the script that Joe Flacco was writing and give Jets fans the hope for a brighter tomorrow.
NFL Betting Trends:
- Dolphins are 0-4-1 ATS in their last 5 October games
- Dolphins are 2-5-1 ATS in their last 8 games after allowing more than 250 yards passing in their previous game
- Jets are 5-1 ATS in their last 6 home games vs. a team with a winning road record
4* Free Week 4 NFL Betting Prediction: Jets +3.0
This is a game that the Jets can win. Wilson is an upgrade and injects fresh blood into the line-up, especially at home. Their defence matches up well against Tyreek Hill and Jaylen Waddle with DJ Reed and Sauce Gardner containing them.
Unfortunately it has to come at the expense of the Dolphins who looked promising until their mismanagement regarding the health of their starting quarterback. Miami has also been a bit looser on defence away from home, giving up a total of 65 points in 2 road games.
