This week 17 match-up will see the Miami Dolphins take on the New England Patriots. This will be a battle between two teams in the AFC East.
New England won the first meeting with Miami 43-0.
Miami Dolphins
The Miami Dolphins managed to get their fourth win of the season when they beat the even worse Cincinnati Bengals this past Sunday. The Dolphins were winning this game by as much as 28-6 before seeing the Bengals tie the game and force overtime. Miami managed to win the game with a game-winning field goal in the extra quarter.
Even though they scored 38 against the Bengals, the Dolphins still have one of if not the worst offenses in the NFL this season. They are 27th in total yards per game, and last in rushing yards per game. They do have an average passing attack, averaging 231.9 yards per game, but only score an average of 18.6 points per game.

As for their defense, Miami is also one of the worst teams. They allowed the Bengals to gain a total of 430 yards and made Andy Dalton look like a superstar. It makes sense that they allowed this many yards as they are last in the NFL, allowing 400.8 yards per game.
They are also the the worst scoring defense an allow an average of 31.3 points per game. I really do not know how the Dolphins will be able to move the ball effectively against this New England defense.
New England Patriots
The Patriots held off the Buffalo Bills this past Saturday to clinch the AFC East division. They won this game 24-17. Even though they were trailing 17-13 heading into the fourth quarter, both the offense and the defense were able to step up in the final 15 minutes to take home the division crown.
New England’s offense continues to somewhat inconsistent despite the fact that their offensive numbers are decent. They do only average 354.1 yards per game, the 16th best offense in the league. They average 249.6 passing yards per game, the 9th best in the NFL.
Their rushing offense however is below average, ranking 19th in the league. Also, they are averaging 26.4 points per game, but some of this scoring does come from their defense. Tom Brady has not been as dominant as in previous years which could be a concern for the playoffs, but will likely not be a big issue for this game.
New England’s defense is why they are playing for a number two seed in the conference. They allow the least amount of yards in the league, an average of 268.3 per game. They have the 2nd best passing defense and the 7th best rushing defense. Furthermore, they are the best scoring defense in the league, allowing only 13.2 points per game.
Last time they faced Miami, they shut them out and now being at home, I expect the Patriots’ defense to dominate again.
NFL Betting Trends:
- NE are 22-5 ATS vs. a team with a losing record.
- NE are 15-5-1 ATS in their last 21 games in Week 17.
- MIA are 0-7 ATS in their last 7 meetings in New England.
- Under is 9-3 in NE last 12 vs. AFC East.
4* Free NFL Betting Prediction: UNDER 45.5
The Patriots are still looking to wrap up the number two seed in the AFC, so I expect them to play at full strength for at least majority of this game. However, this New England defense is going to be the difference and I believe they will hold the Dolphins well under their season average.
The Patriots do not need style points in this game, so they can play at a slower pace to avoid any injuries. For that reason, I like the under to be the play.
