The Miami Dolphins held onto the seventh and final AFC playoff spot with a big home win over their division rival, the New England Patriots.
The Las Vegas Raiders continue their free fall out of the playoff hunt losing their fourth out of their last five games falling to the Los Angeles Chargers last week.
The Dolphins have a great chance to end the Raiders’ chances of a playoff berth and another step toward their own playoff berth with a win here.
Miami Dolphins
Having started the year 1-3, the Fins have gone 8-2 and looking to clinch their first playoff appearance since 2016. They ended the New England Patriots’ streak of playoffs last week 22-12 and can do the same to ending the Raiders’ chances this week.
The Dolphins’ defense continues to lead the way. In spite of being average defensively in yards per game, they are first in scoring defense, third down conversions and takeaways per game. They limited the Patriots to four field goals.
Outside of the Chiefs, they haven’t been facing a lot of top ten offenses; however, the Dolphins defense deserves a lot of respect – they are consistent. With QB Derek Carr 50-50 to play, and even if he does he will be very limited with a groin injury, I do not expect the Raiders to give a better than their average offensive showing.
Offensively, the Dolphins offense exploded for 250 rushing yards last week against a weaker Patriot rush defense. QB Tua Tagovailoa continues to manage games well despite a mistake here and there but he continues to do what it takes to win. With only three teams having a worse scoring defense and near the bottom in turnovers, Tua should continue to move the ball safely and rely on the defense.
Las Vegas Raiders
Will he play or won’t he play? Coach Gruden recently indicated that QB Derek Carr is 50-50 to start. He categorized the groin injury as significant. Even if he were to start, how effective can he be against a ball hawking defense like Miami’s who is also in the top ten for sack percentage (not to mention the Raiders being in the top ten sacks allowed percentage)?
QB Marcus Mariota did a great job replacing the injured Carr with 226 passing yards and rushing for another 88 yards but ultimately gave up an interception that cost the Raiders the game. Against these Miami Dolphins, points will be at a premium, so he needs to take care of the ball and efficiently end drives with points for the Raiders to be successful.
The defense needs to show up for this game. They were shorthanded last week and the change in defensive coordinators failed to stop blown coverages and penalties. The Dolphins offense isn’t going to set the world on fire but the Raiders have to buckle down and not make things easy on the the Dolphins rookie QB.
NFL Betting Trends:
- Dolphins are 5-0 ATS in their last 5 games in the Pacific Time Zone.
- Dolphins are 4-0 ATS in their last 4 games versus the AFC.
- Raiders are 0-4 in their last 4 games.
- Raiders are 2-7 SU in their last 9 home games.
4* Free NFL Betting Prediction: Dolphins – 2.5
The Miami Dolphins are in control of their destiny and can take another step with a win here. The Raiders are nearly eliminated and their move to fix the defense came too little too late. With the same defensive problems plaguing the team in the Chargers game, I don’t expect the ship to be righted on a short week and playing for a significant longshot to get in.
The defensive mismatch compounded with Derek Carr’s injury puts the Raiders in a bad spot. Even if the Raiders’ defense keeps the team in the game, can you trust Marcus Mariota against CB Xavien Howard and that thieving defense? In a one possession game, I prefer the opportunistic defense and will continue to fade a Raiders team that has very little fight left. I suggest the Dolphins up to -4.0.
