The Indianapolis Colts continue to be one of the hotter teams in the NFL winning their fifth out of six games last week 27-20 over the Houston Texans.
The Pittsburgh Steelers are desperate to get back on track having lost three in a row with the low point of the season coming in last week’s defeat to the Bengals.
The Colts need to keep pace with the Tennessee Titans to have a chance at winning the division and taking over the third seed in the AFC playoffs. The lethargic Steelers’ offense may not have what it takes to keep up.
Indianapolis Colts
Despite getting outgained last week by the Houston Texans, the Colts used five sacks and two turnovers, one of which was in the final minute of the game, to come away with a victory. The Texans offense was able to find some success through the air with 342 yards but the defense continues to make enough key plays to inch closer to the playoffs.
QB Philip Rivers had another efficient game. His TD:INT is 11:2 over the last five games. While he is known to be turnover prone, the Colts can be a dangerous team if he takes care of the ball. Facing a Steelers’ defense that gives up less than 200 yards a game passing can be daunting. Expect the Colts to rely a bit more on top 10 rushing back RB Jonathan Taylor to keep some of the pressure off Rivers needing to force a play and chancing a turnover.
The Colts’ defensive unit is seventh in the NFL in yards per game and third in takeaways per game. They should see less of a challenge in this matchup than with the Watson-led Texans last week. With the Steelers being in the bottom five of rushing and QB Ben Roethlisberger no threat to run, the Colts’ defense can focus on the pass and should have a good chance to bounce back.
Pittsburgh Steelers
The Steelers did not look like the team that won 11 games in a row Monday night. After losing 11 straight to the Steelers, the Bengals used all their moxie to come away with a win and increase the panic in the Steel City.
The defense is not the issue as the Steelers continue to give up less than 300 yards per game this season. They held the Bengals to 230 yards of offense. Pittsburgh’s defense is in the top ten in both third down conversions and red zone scoring. The Colts are in the bottom half for both, so I expect the the Steelers defense to be up to the challenge.
The problem lies with the offense. The Steelers have gone 1-4 over their last five games and have not exceeded 20 points in that span. There are no signs of improving as they were limited to 244 yards of total offense and went three-and-out on seven of their first eight possessions.
NFL Betting Trends:
- Colts are 4-2 ATS in their last 6 games.
- Colts are 5-1 SU in their last 6 games.
- Steelers are 1-4 ATS in their last 5 games.
- Steelers are 0-4 ATS in their last 4 games following a straight up loss.
4* Free NFL Betting Prediction: Colts -1.5
Injuries are mounting for the Pittsburgh Steelers and the offense does not seem to getting better. Pittsburgh will have another short week to heal up and fix the offense. With a hot Colts team arriving with an opportunistic defense, is this the week Ben and the offense figures it out?
The Steelers need a win to clinch the division but I don’t think they can get back on track in a short turnaround. I anticipate the Colts defense to set the tone early facing an anemic Steelers offense. The Colts should have just enough success running the ball to let Rivers not feel the need to win the game on his own.
I believe the Colts can grind a win and would bet up to -3.0. I think both defenses will have success, so I’d avoid the hook.
