The Rams will face a tough test in the debut of new head coach Sean McVay.
The last time the Colts and the Rams matched up was in 2013 when the Rams won easily 38-8.
Indianapolis Colts
The Indianapolis Colts success this season rests on the shoulder of franchise QB Andrew Luck. If the Colts are going to return to the postseason he will need to play at an MVP caliber level.
He won’t suit up for week 1 and the Colts needed a reliable backup option and traded for New England third stringer Jacoby Brisset.
Although Brisset was buried on the New England depth chart he has the talent to succeed as a long-term starter in my opinion.
It has been announced that it will be Scott Tolzien getting the start this weekend when the Colts face the Rams.
His ceiling has me thinking he can throw for a couple touchdown passes.
One major bright spot for the Colts offensive line is that Aaron Donald is expected to take his holdout into the regular season, which will make their job easier.
Frank Gore isn’t playing at his former pro bowl level, but he is still a very reliable and capable running back as he heads towards the end of his career.
The Rams defensive line still has Robert Quinn, and it won’t surprise me to see Gore struggle to crack the 70 yard mark.

The Colts defense hasn’t been known as a juggernaught the since the Peyton Manning era, but cornerback Vontae Davis leads a talented and young secondary.
Rookie safety Malik Hooker should provide stability and speed to match up with any wideout in the league. His versatility should help him cover Sammy Watkins and Tavon Austin on the deep ball.
Los Angeles Rams
The Rams fired Jeff Fisher as the 2016 season drew to a close, and Sean McVay takes over as the youngest head coach in NFL history.
There are weapons on the offensive side of the ball, but the big question will be if Jared Goff can improve on his rookie numbers.
Goff is already being labeled a bust but should see improvement under McVay’s offensive scheme.
He also has speedy wideouts Tavon Austin ad Sammy Watkins, who was acquired through a trade with the Bills and will be playing for a contract extension. I expect Goff to struggle in the first game, and throw 3 interceptions.
Todd Gurley had a breakout rookie season in 2015, but his sophomore campaign was hurt by poor offensive line and quarterback play. When teams are loading up the box daring your rookie to throw the ball, you won’t see many breakout runs.
Gurley should have a good game against the Colts D-line and a 100 yard, two touchdown performance isn’t out of the question.

The Rams won’t have defensive player of the year candidate Aaron Donald, but should still provide a tough matchup for the Colts offense.
A handful of turnovers and 4 sacks should be the end result for the defense in this one.

This will be a low scoring game, as neither QB gets into a good rhythm.
NFL Free Week 1 Score Prediction: Colts 21 – Rams 14
Tolzien or (if he’s benched – which could easily happen) Brissett makes a few plays late for the Colts, and gets a W in the Colts first game of the year.
