Week 2 opens with a heavyweight interconference matchup as the Detroit Lions visit the Buffalo Bills at the new Highmark Stadium in Orchard Park. Both teams are 1-0 after surviving one-point games on opening weekend, and Thursday Night Football kicks off at 8:15 PM ET on Prime.
Detroit escaped Ford Field with a 31-30 overtime win over New Orleans after the Saints rallied late and forced extra time. Jahmyr Gibbs carried a massive workload in the opener, rushing for 156 yards while helping the Lions survive a game that became much more uncomfortable than Dan Campbell would have preferred.
Buffalo’s opener followed a similar script, as the Bills went into Houston and won 36-31 with Josh Allen leading the decisive fourth-quarter drive after Buffalo fell behind late.
Two 1-0 teams arrive on a short week after allowing 61 combined points Sunday.
There’s another wrinkle here beyond the records.
This is Buffalo’s first regular-season game in the new Highmark Stadium, giving Joe Brady’s team a Thursday night home opener with considerably more buzz than the average Week 2 matchup. Detroit won’t be interested in playing supporting actor for the stadium party, which gives this one a little extra juice before the ball is even kicked.

Detroit Lions vs. Buffalo Bills Odds & Last 5
Buffalo is a 4.5-point home favorite entering Thursday, with the Bills around -230 on the moneyline and Detroit roughly +188. The total is sitting at 54.5, immediately putting this among the higher-scoring expectations on the Week 2 board. The most recent meeting offers a pretty good reminder of what these offenses can do when things open up, as Buffalo beat Detroit 48-42 at Ford Field in December 2024.
Of course, we’re not betting a game from two seasons ago.
What matters more is how these clubs opened 2026. Detroit scored 31 against New Orleans despite needing overtime, while Buffalo put 36 on Houston and finished with 409 total yards. Neither defense exactly slammed the door, with the Lions surrendering 30 and Buffalo giving up 31. That makes 54.5 a serious number, but bookmakers aren’t hanging it there for decoration.
Bills Stats From Last Season
Buffalo’s first game under head coach Joe Brady produced plenty of offense. The Bills generated 409 total yards in Houston and scored 36 points, including the game-winning touchdown late in the fourth quarter. Josh Allen threw for 334 yards and two touchdowns without an interception, while also accounting for two additional scores on the ground.
Buffalo already has multiple ways to punish a defense when Allen extends a possession.
The new-look receiving group made an immediate impact. Dalton Kincaid posted a career-high 130 receiving yards, while offseason addition DJ Moore caught five passes for 100 yards and a touchdown.
Buffalo’s defense had a much less comfortable afternoon.
The Bills surrendered 31 points and 381 total yards to Houston, although they produced enough pressure and made the stop they needed on the Texans’ final possession. That’s the part of Week 1 Joe Brady would undoubtedly prefer to clean up before facing Detroit’s collection of playmakers.
Lions Stats From Last Season
Detroit’s opener was hardly boring. The Lions scored 31 points, produced 369 total yards and leaned heavily on Jahmyr Gibbs after entering the season with an expanded role planned for their star running back.
Gibbs responded with 156 rushing yards and two touchdowns on 29 carries. He finished with 186 yards from scrimmage on 34 touches, giving Detroit a workhorse performance when the game tightened up. Jared Goff threw for 206 yards and two touchdowns without an interception, while Amon-Ra St. Brown caught 10 passes for 67 yards and two scores. The defense created pressure, but New Orleans still scored 30 points and pushed the game into overtime.
Detroit also enters Thursday with some real concerns along the offensive line. Starting guard Christian Mahogany and rookie tackle Blake Miller have been ruled out, adding another challenge against a Buffalo defense that generated pressure in Houston.
On a short week, that’s not a minor footnote.

Lions vs. Bills QB Matchup
Josh Allen wasted little time reminding everyone what drives Buffalo’s offense. He completed 25 of 34 passes for 334 yards and two touchdowns against Houston, then added two rushing scores as the Bills repeatedly leaned on him in high-leverage situations.
The most important sequence came late. Buffalo trailed 31-30 and started at its own four-yard line with 3:13 remaining. Allen moved the Bills downfield and eventually hit Joshua Palmer for a 34-yard touchdown that supplied the winning points.
Allen’s ability to rescue broken plays remains the problem Detroit has to solve Thursday.
Jared Goff’s Week 1 numbers weren’t nearly as explosive, but Detroit didn’t need him to carry the offense with Gibbs running wild.
Goff finished with 206 passing yards, two touchdowns and no interceptions in the overtime victory. His job gets more complicated in Buffalo. Detroit’s offensive-line injuries could force Goff to operate against pressure with less protection than Campbell would like. Buffalo allowed plenty through the air in Houston, though, so there should still be opportunities for Goff to work St. Brown and the rest of Detroit’s receiving group if the protection holds up.
Allen owns the improvisational advantage, while Goff is at his best when Detroit keeps the pocket clean and lets him work on schedule. That contrast should be one of the defining tactical battles Thursday night.
Detroit Lions vs. Buffalo Bills bottom line: Buffalo has the home field, Allen and the new-stadium party, but Detroit brings enough offensive firepower to make this uncomfortable. The matchup looks fun; now the question is whether the sportsbooks left us anything worth betting.

Here is my Lions Bills free pick: Over 54.5 is where I’m going on Thursday Night Football. Detroit survived a 31-30 overtime shootout with New Orleans in Week 1, while Buffalo opened with a 36-31 win at Houston. That’s 128 combined points from these teams before they even got introduced to each other.
Buffalo showed exactly how dangerous this offense can be when Josh Allen gets rolling. Dalton Kincaid went for 130 receiving yards, DJ Moore reached 100, and Allen repeatedly created answers when Houston threatened to take control.
Neither Week 1 defense gave me much reason to start shopping for an under.

There’s also something to be said for the setting. The Lions aren’t exactly built to nurse a 17-13 game, either. My NFL betting approach here is pretty simple: both offenses showed immediate scoring upside, and both defenses allowed 30-plus in Week 1.
I’ll make the number prove it’s too high.
