Bengals vs. Texans Gameday
Cincinnati hits the road for the first time this season Sunday, visiting Houston at Reliant Stadium. Kickoff is set for 1:00 PM ET on CBS.
The Bengals are 1-0 after beating Tampa Bay 33-27 in their opener. Cincinnati built a 24-10 halftime lead, survived a Buccaneers rally and leaned heavily on four forced fumbles to get Zac Taylor’s team safely across the finish line.
Cincinnati forced four fumbles in Week 1, which is one way to make an opener considerably less stressful.
Houston is 0-1 after losing a 36-31 thriller to Buffalo. The Texans led late before Josh Allen directed a 96-yard touchdown drive, and Houston’s final possession ended with C.J. Stroud getting stripped inside the Buffalo 10.
That’s a fairly cruel way to start 0-1.
The Texans won the most recent meeting 30-27 in Cincinnati in 2023. Houston has also won eight of the 12 regular-season meetings between these teams.
Week 2, Cincinnati Bengals vs. Houston Texans, with two AFC offenses coming off 30-point afternoons and neither defense arriving with much reason to brag.

Cincinnati Bengals vs. Houston Texans Odds & Last 5
Houston opened as a short home favorite, with the Texans laying around 2.5 points and Cincinnati getting +2.5. The opening total was 46.5, putting another decent-sized number on two offenses that combined for 64 points last Sunday.
Week 1 certainly didn’t scare anybody away from the Over.
Cincinnati scored 33 against Tampa Bay despite producing 351 total yards. Four Buccaneers fumbles were the gift that kept giving, with Cincinnati turning those mistakes into 20 points.
Houston’s 31 came with considerably less assistance.
The Texans produced 381 yards against Buffalo, scored touchdowns on four of five red-zone trips and held the lead with less than two minutes remaining. One Josh Allen comeback later, they were explaining how a five-point loss happened.
Houston won the previous meeting 30-27, although that game came back in 2023. The more useful question Sunday is whether either defense improved enough in six days to slow down two capable quarterbacks.
Texans Stats From Last Week
Houston’s remodeled offense showed immediate signs of life against Buffalo. The Texans generated 381 yards and 31 points, including 124 yards on the ground.
C.J. Stroud spread the work around.
Stroud completed 26 of 38 passes for 274 yards and two touchdowns while targeting 11 different players. Nico Collins led the group with seven catches for 75 yards and a touchdown.
Houston finally found its red-zone offense, then unfortunately discovered Josh Allen still gets a final possession.
David Montgomery made an immediate impact in his Texans debut. He scored three touchdowns, two rushing and one receiving, giving Houston the kind of short-yardage finishing power it lacked too often last season.
The defense had a rougher afternoon.
Buffalo produced 409 yards, including 334 through the air, and put together two drives of more than 90 yards. Houston didn’t force a turnover and couldn’t protect its late lead.
Collins is now the injury to watch. He hurt his hamstring during Wednesday’s practice and was limited Thursday, leaving his availability for Sunday uncertain.
Bengals Stats From Last Week
Cincinnati opened with 33 points against Tampa Bay, although the box score came with a giant assist from the defense. The Bengals turned four Buccaneers fumbles into 20 points.
Joe Burrow was solid rather than spectacular.
Burrow completed 25 of 35 passes for 254 yards, one touchdown and one interception. Cincinnati finished with 351 total yards while Chase Brown supplied a rushing touchdown.
The defense was the real story.
Cincinnati repeatedly knocked the football loose, including a Demetrius Knight Jr. scoop-and-score. The Bengals also generated enough pressure to keep Baker Mayfield uncomfortable and eventually close out the six-point win. There were still cracks.
Tampa Bay scored 27 points and made it a one-possession game in the second half. Depending on four takeaways every Sunday is a pretty ambitious business model, especially against a Houston offense that protected the ball reasonably well until its final possession.
The Bengals now get their first road test.

Bengals vs. Texans QB Matchup
Joe Burrow enters Week 2 after completing 25 of 35 passes for 254 yards against Tampa Bay. He threw one touchdown and one interception, with Cincinnati’s turnover-happy defense repeatedly giving him favorable field position.
Burrow didn’t need to play superhero.
Burrow and Stroud both cleared 250 yards in Week 1, and neither defense looked eager for an encore.
C.J. Stroud threw for 274 yards and two touchdowns against Buffalo while completing better than 68% of his passes. He distributed the ball to 11 receivers and helped Houston score touchdowns on four of five red-zone possessions.
His final mistake was expensive.
Stroud was stripped by Greg Rousseau at the Buffalo 9 on Houston’s last possession, ending what could have been a game-winning drive. That turnover shouldn’t erase an otherwise encouraging afternoon for a Texans offense that looked much more functional than it did last season.
Burrow faces a Houston defense that surrendered 334 passing yards to Josh Allen. Stroud gets a Cincinnati defense coming off four forced fumbles but 27 points allowed.
Something has to give.
Bengals vs. Texans bottom line: both quarterbacks have enough weapons to make 46.5 disappear, but Collins’ hamstring is the little piece of Thursday news keeping this from becoming an automatic invitation to start counting touchdowns.

Houston already proved it can trade punches.
These offenses combined for 64 points in Week 1, and neither quarterback needed a masterpiece to get there.
C.J. Stroud threw for 274 yards and two touchdowns against Buffalo, while David Montgomery scored three times in his Texans debut. Houston also went four-for-five scoring touchdowns in the red zone.
The concern is Nico Collins’ hamstring.
Collins was limited Thursday after getting hurt in practice, and losing him would remove Houston’s best receiver. Still, Stroud targeted 11 different players in Week 1, so this offense isn’t completely dependent on one set of hands.
Cincinnati’s defense created four fumbles against Tampa Bay, but it also allowed 27 points. Houston gave up 36 and 409 yards to Buffalo, including 334 through the air.
That gives both quarterbacks enough vulnerable real estate.
I don’t need another Week 1 track meet. Give me two capable offenses getting into the mid-20s and doing the rest from there.
Over 46.5 is my play.
