A couple of coaches who may be taking the field for the last time with their current teams meet up in the Twin Cities when the Bears and Vikings put a bow on their 2021/22 campaign.
Matt Nagy and Mike Zimmer may both find themselves in the unemployment line on Monday morning after disappointing seasons that had high expectations. Could a win here save the job for either of them or are their respective fates sealed.
Chicago Bears
Chicago had announced Justin Fields was going to get the nod at signal caller this week, but the rookie QB has landed himself on the COVID / reserve list and may just be shut down for the season. Fields was going to be the third QB to start for Chicago the last three games with Nick Foles and Andy Dalton leading the team to victories over that span.
It will likely be Dalton in at QB vs. Minnesota, as he led the team to a 29-3 win over New York last Sunday. Well, really the Giants lost that game more than the Bears won it as Dalton’s 18/35 for 173 yards with 1 TD/1 INT isn’t anything to be impressed by.
Chicago’s defense did hold the Giants to -6 yards passing last week, sacking Mike Glennon four times while intercepting two passes and recovering two fumbles. The Bears held Russell Wilson to 181 yards passing in a 25-24 win in Seattle in week 16.
Sunday’s regular season finale has the potential to be lower scoring, even though the total is up there at 44.5. The Vikings beat Chicago in week 15 by the score of 17-9 even though Minnesota had less than 200 total yards in that game.
Minnesota Vikings
It’s not just Zimmer that could be out in Minnesota, as the team could opt to move on from QB Kirk Cousins in the offseason. Cousins’ numbers are solid with what should be a second straight 4,000+ yard passing season (3,971 right now) but he’s led Minnesota to just two playoff games in four years with the team.
Another reason Minnesota may make some offseason changes is because they are horrible underachievers. The Vikings have one of the best RBs in the league in Dalvin Cook as well as a top WR combo in Justin Jefferson / Adam Thielen and they still can’t muster even a wild card berth.
Cousins missed last week’s 37-10 loss in Green Bay with a positive COVID test, and Sean Mannion came in to go 22/36 for 189 yards. Cousins did play in the week 15 win in Chicago but was just 12/24 for 87 yards with 2 TD and 1 INT.

4* Free Week 18 NFL Betting Prediction: Bears +5.5
Chicago has grabbed two wins in a row, although one of those was against the lowly Giants. Either way the Bears’ defense played great against New York and was pretty good at controlling Minnesota in their previous meeting this season albeit at home.
Fields may have given the Bears a boost if he played as the rookie was showing some promise at times, but Chicago also has arguably the best backup situation in the league with experienced vets Dalton and Foles.

One major question is who plays (or how long) for the Vikings as injuries to Jefferson or Cook are just not worth the risk so close to the offseason.
