Chicago Bears
The Bears had a big upset in week 1, beating the 49ers 19-10 in a slop fest of a game at Solider Field where the field was flooded basically due to heavy rain. After going down 10-0, they scored 19 unanswered in the game. Justin Fields was 8/17 with 121 yards, 2 TDs and 1 interception in the game. Khalil Herbert lead the team in rushing, going for 45 yards and a TD on 9 carries. One surprise was David Montgomery who couldn’t get it going; rushing 17 times for only 26 yards, an average of 1.5 yards a carry.
With the sloppy conditions in this game, it’s really hard to judge just how shaky the Bears offensive line and wideout core is. Besides Darnell Mooney, the Bears brought in a mix of other teams 4th or 5th receivers from last season and those receivers are all getting a chance to become the number 2. Darnell Mooney only had 1 catch for 8 yards and Cole Kmet, which people are thinking could have a big year, had 0 catches in the game. But like I have stated, this type of game is really hard to judge any stats on.
The key for the Bears in this game is going to being able to establish the run against the Packers defense. The Packers, even though they didn’t show it, are pretty deep in the secondary and I don’t see this receiving core being able to get open against them.
Green Bay Packers
The Packers are coming off a rough performance in Minnesota last week. They lost 23-7 and really looked awful on offense without Davante Adams. Aaron Rodgers was 22/34 for 195 yards and an interception; also had one lost fumble. AJ Dillon (a running back), lead the team in receiving having 5 catches for 46 yards while also adding 45 yards and a touchdown on the ground.
On paper, the Packers defense looks great; but they didn’t have a good performance at all. They left Justin Jefferson open all day and he had 9 catches for 184 yards and two touchdowns. The good thing for them is that the Bears don’t have a receiver anything close to what Jefferson is.
The Packers played worse last year in the first game and bounced back with a strong week 2 performance and you know that Lambeau Field is going to be rocking for a Sunday Night Game as the home opener. This is a great opportunity to show the NFL what this team is going to be this season.
