Panthers vs. Falcons Gameday
Carolina and Atlanta meet Sunday at Mercedes-Benz Stadium with both NFC South teams trying to avoid an 0-2 start. Kickoff is set for 1:00 PM ET on FOX.
The Panthers lost one of the stranger openers you’ll see, falling 59-37 to Chicago despite producing a franchise-record 478 yards in a season opener. Carolina was tied 31-31 midway through the third quarter before its defense completely lost the plot.
Scoring 37 usually buys you a win; Carolina apparently forgot to purchase the defensive package.
Atlanta’s opener was considerably less chaotic. The Falcons lost 20-13 in Pittsburgh with Cooper Rush starting after Tua Tagovailoa injured his oblique late in the week.
Neither team needs another loss.
Carolina won both meetings last season, including a 30-27 victory in Atlanta. The Panthers have taken four of the last five in the series, giving the Falcons another reason to make their home opener count.
Week 2, Carolina Panthers vs. Atlanta Falcons, and somebody in the NFC South is finally guaranteed to leave a stadium with a win.

Carolina Panthers vs. Atlanta Falcons Odds & Last 5
Carolina is currently a 2.5-point road favorite with a moneyline around -140, while Atlanta is approximately +120. The total sits at 43.5.
The line has moved toward Carolina.
Atlanta opened as a slight favorite before the market flipped, with the Falcons’ quarterback uncertainty undoubtedly part of the conversation. Tua Tagovailoa missed Thursday’s practice with his oblique injury, and Kevin Stefanski has yet to name Sunday’s starter.
Carolina has won four of the last five meetings between these teams. The Panthers swept Atlanta last season, although both games were decided by one score.
That includes the 30-27 win at Mercedes-Benz Stadium.
The question now is whether Carolina’s Week 1 offensive explosion travels, or whether the Falcons can make Bryce Young work considerably harder than Chicago did.
Falcons Stats From Last Season
Atlanta’s Kevin Stefanski era opened with a 20-13 loss in Pittsburgh. The Falcons managed 238 total yards and struggled to create much through the passing game, but their defense kept them within one possession most of the afternoon.
Bijan Robinson was not the problem.
Robinson rushed for 83 yards and finished with 173 yards from scrimmage, accounting for a huge portion of Atlanta’s offense. That’s worth remembering against a Carolina defense that just allowed Chicago to run for 291 yards and six touchdowns.
If Robinson watched Carolina’s Week 1 film, he probably didn’t need much convincing to attend Sunday’s meeting.
Cooper Rush started for the injured Tagovailoa and completed 12 of 22 passes for 143 yards with one touchdown and one interception. Atlanta has not committed to Rush again this week.
The defense offered considerably more encouragement.
Atlanta allowed only 20 points and 264 total yards in Pittsburgh, including just 58 on the ground. That’s a much cleaner defensive résumé than the one Carolina brings south.
The quarterback room remains the obvious issue. Tagovailoa didn’t practice Thursday, while Rush and Michael Penix Jr. were both full participants, leaving Stefanski with a decision still to make.
Panthers Stats From Last Season
Carolina’s offense came out firing in Week 1. The Panthers piled up 478 yards and 37 points against Chicago, setting franchise records for both points and total yards in a season opener.
Bryce Young looked ready.
Young completed 23 of 37 passes for 361 yards and three touchdowns, although he also threw an interception. Jalen Coker turned eight catches into 138 yards and two touchdowns, giving Carolina a legitimate downfield threat throughout the afternoon.
Coker has been limited this week with an ankle injury.
The defense is where this gets ugly. Carolina surrendered a franchise-record 59 points, 552 total yards and an absurd 291 rushing yards to Chicago.
Six of the Bears’ touchdowns came on the ground.
That’s not exactly ideal preparation for Robinson. Carolina has had a full week to figure out what went wrong, but fixing a run defense that was gashed for 7.5 yards per carry isn’t usually a Tuesday-afternoon maintenance job.

Panthers vs. Falcons QB Matchup
Bryce Young enters Week 2 with considerably more certainty than anyone in Atlanta’s quarterback room. He threw for 361 yards and three touchdowns against Chicago, producing the best regular-season opener of his NFL career.
Young also ran for a touchdown.
Young knows he’s starting Sunday; Atlanta’s quarterback room is still waiting for somebody to grab the name tag.
The Falcons haven’t named their starter. Tua Tagovailoa remains sidelined in practice with an oblique injury, while Cooper Rush and Michael Penix Jr. have both been working this week.
Rush started in Pittsburgh and threw for 143 yards with one touchdown and one interception. Penix is working his way back from the knee injury that wiped out his 2025 season, so Atlanta has more options than answers right now.
That’s a fairly important distinction.
Carolina knows exactly what it wants from Young after last week’s offensive performance. Atlanta may not know who’s taking the first snap until much closer to Sunday, but whoever gets it should have Robinson standing nearby against a defense that just surrendered 291 rushing yards.
Panthers vs. Falcons bottom line: Bryce Young brought plenty of fireworks in Week 1, but Carolina’s defense brought the gasoline, and handing points on the road after allowing 59 requires a stronger stomach than mine.

That’s a considerably friendlier assignment.
Carolina scored 37 last week and still lost by 22, which takes some impressive defensive cooperation.
Atlanta’s quarterback situation is unsettled, and I’m not pretending that’s ideal. Tua Tagovailoa is still dealing with his oblique injury, while Cooper Rush and Michael Penix Jr. remain possibilities for Sunday.
The Panthers are also laying points on the road after surrendering a franchise-record 59 in their opener. Bryce Young can absolutely punish Atlanta if the Falcons can’t generate pressure, but Carolina hasn’t earned much trust on the other side of the football.
This is an NFC South game, so expecting anything aesthetically pleasing feels greedy.
Give me Robinson, the home field and the points against a Panthers defense that spent Week 1 making every Bears running play look suspiciously promising.
