That is a lot of quality leadership to replace but after three losing seasons in four years, including the last two, the Panthers organization felt it was time to re-build.
After five wins a season ago, Carolina’s 2020 total has been set at 5.5 with some juice on the under. Only four other teams have longer Super Bowl odds than the Panthers’ 150/1.

Key Additions:
- Teddy Bridgewater
- Russell Okung
- Robby Anderson
Teddy Bridgewater won all five games he started for New Orleans last season, which was enough to earn him another opportunity as the top quarterback on an NFL depth chart.
Bridgewater started 12 games for Minnesota as a rookie in 2014 and all 16 the next season, when he was named to the NFC Pro Bowl team.
But a major knee injury wiped out his 2016 season and, eventually, his career in Minnesota. He signed with New Orleans as a backup in 2018 but made only one start.
He didn’t put up big statistics for the Saints last season but the Panthers were convinced by the wins and losses.
Russell Okung will protect Bridgewater’s blindside and Robby Anderson gives him a second threat on the outside with DJ Moore on the other and Curtis Samuel in the slot.
Key Losses:
- Cam Newton
- Luke Kuechly
- Greg Olsen
- Trai Turner
Newton remains a free agent and continues to search for a starting spot elsewhere. He may not have all that many options to choose from; he’s a big personality who will drastically affect any locker room he enters and he’s coming off a season in which he started only two games and lost them both.
Luke Kuechly will turn 29 later in April but he decided to hang it up after eight seasons playing at the highest level at one of the NFL’s most demanding positions. The Panthers’ defense wasn’t particularly good with him in the lineup last season but it will undoubtedly feel Kuechly’s departure, both in terms of statistical production and leadership.
Greg Olsen signed with the Seattle Seahawks and the three most recognizable players from Carolina’s heyday in the mid-2010s are all gone in one offseason swoop.
Trai Turner was dealt for Okung in a one-for-one trade in lineman. He has made the NFC’s last five Pro Bowl teams and is five years younger than Okung.
2020 Carolina Panthers Predictions: Off Season Analysis
Not only are Newton, Kuechly and Olsen all gone, so is Ron Rivera, who was fired with more than a month to go in the 2019 regular season.
The Panthers didn’t go out and hire a young head coach, at least by today’s NFL standards but it did bring in a man with only one year of NFL experience in his career.
That would be Matt Rhule, who most recently served as the head coach at Baylor. He has been nearly exclusively a college football coach with the exception of one season with the New York Giants in 2012, when he served as an assistant offensive line coach.
2020 Carolina Panthers Win Total Prediction
Fresh energy from a new head coach can only go so far and the Panthers lost a significant amount on both sides of the ball, not to mention a darn good head coach in Ron Rivera.
It has put a lot of faith in Teddy Bridgewater to both stay healthy and produce, which is a little scary. Even if Bridgewater does prove durable, the odds are stacked against him.
I’ll pay the extra ten cents and take the Panthers to go under 5.5 wins in 2020.
