In a move intended to change locker room culture, and create cap space, New York shook the league in March by sending outspoken All Pro WR Odell Beckham Jr. to the Cleveland Browns. Beckham missed the final four games last year, but netted 1,052 yards and 77 receptions in twelve starts.
More than anything, though, the Beckham trade signifies a much-needed rebuild for a Giants franchise that’s spent the past decade spinning its wheels.
This season, New York is embracing change.
2019 New York Giants Predictions: Roster Changes
And obviously, Beckham’s departure casts a wide shadow among Giants Nation. No franchise can abruptly sever ties with a prime, generational talent without confusion abounding. The picture became clearer, however, when standout LB Olivier Vernon was packaged with Beckham and sent to Cleveland.
Last season, Vernon made his first Pro Bowl after helming the NYG defense. In return for their most consistent offensive and defensive performers, New York recieved the lighter contracts of solid RG Kevin Zeitler and SS/special team standout Jabrill Peppers. Free Agent wideout Golden Tate also joins Zeitler and Peppers among New York’s affordable, new additions. Although, after splitting time last season with Detroit and Philadelphia (74 rec., 795 yards), Johnson will serve suspension until week five for violating the league’s banned substance policy.
Yet, When Johnson returns he and Zeitler will make life easier for aging Giants icon Eli Manning who recieved little pocket protection last season.
Concerning Manning, the Giants’ decision to draft QB Daniel Jones from Duke #6 overall this offseason nullifies any sliver of rebuild doubt. If not for Beckham’s situation, the fact New York selected their ‘quartback of the future’ during 38-year-old Manning’s final contracted year would’ve gained top-storyline billing.
That stated, expect Manning to pass the torch gradually. Last season, Manning amassed 4,229 passing yards and 21 TD’s against 11 picks. Yet, the two-time Super Bowl champion had trouble leading his team to wins late as NYG lost eight games by seven points or less.
Though, some of that hard-luck onus resides upon a 24th ranked defense. The consensus is Manning can still make plays at the highest level. It will be interesting to see if New York signs Eli beyond 2019, or if Manning even opts to continue his NFL journey.

To round out their 2019 draft, New York selected impact rookies DT Dexter Lawrence and CB DeAndre Baker. Each first-rounder is expected to uplift the Giants’ subpar defense. Additional incoming help comes from third-round selection DE Oshane Ximines, CB Julian Love and fifth-round choice ILB Ryan Connelly.
Finally, the Giants’ last major offseason move occured when three-time Pro Bowler Landon Collins signed a hefty six-year $84 million free agent deal with division-rival Washington.
2019 New York Giants Predictions: Offense
With an improved offensive line and phenom RB Saquon Barkley leading the show, Manning should enjoy greater pocket time this season. That extra time will presumably allow the venerable QB ample space to find 2018 AP Offensive Rookie of the year Barkley (97 rec.), emerging top-threat WR Sterling Johnson and Golden Tate early and often.
With a capable recieving corps, battle tested QB and talented rookie waiting in the wings, the 2019 Giants offense has talent and intrigue.

Pat Shurmur’s offense may actually be better this season from trades, acquisitions and what team GM Dave Gettleman sees as greater locker room cohesion. Though, the Giants’ playmakers will go only as far as their O-line allows.
2019 New York Giants Predictions: Defense
Among the worst statistical defenses league-wide last season, there isn’t much hope this year’s NYG defense will improve.
Still, the secondary should be a nice group. Free agent signing Antonio Bethea will combine with Jabril Peppers and solid draftees DeAndre Baker and Julian Love to harass opposing wideouts.
The burning question for this defense remains the pass rush. Yes, Dexter Lawrence will help. But how much upside can a unit which lost almost 33 percent of its scant 30 sacks from last season really weild?
Look for opposing offenses to again excel against an imbalanced Giants defense.
2019 New York Giants Handicapping: (Strengths/Weaknesses)
New York’s strength is its running game, thanks to Saquon Barkley. Although, this group can provide upset and offensive value if Manning doesn’t fall off an early cliff.
As stated throughout, the Giants’ biggest weakness is defense. Expect plenty of over totals in this year’s NYG contests.

2019 New York Giants Predictions (Final Record): 6-10
This season’s New York Giants are the least talented of all the NFC East offerings. However, with live incoming draftees, a future Hall of Fame QB and stud rookie RB, if nothing else, their rebuild should offer intrigue.
And with that, an upset or two could come New York’s way as they transition toward a new era.
