2018 Oakland Raiders Predictions: Roster Changes
The biggest change to a team that won just six games last season after overachieving and winning twelve two years ago doesn’t have to do with any of the players on the field, but the man on the sideline in charge of them all.
Jon Gruden signed the largest coaching contract in the NFL: ten years and $100 million in total. He will be the second-highest paid coach in the NFL this season at $10 million, only behind Bill Belichick’s $12.5 million salary.

Offensively, the Raiders added some experience to a passing game that figures to be humming again with Derek Carr reportedly 100 percent healthy and ready to go.
Jordy Nelson came over after a long and successful career with Green Bay. Martavis Bryant will also join Amari Cooper and Nelson as a deep threat after a turbulent career with the Pittsburgh Steelers that saw some big games but also quite a few problems.
Michael Crabtree signed with the Ravens but the Raiders are confident the two big names they brought in will more than make up for his loss.
The offensive line got an upgrade in first round pick Kolton Miller. He will start at one of the tackle spots.
Defensively, Gareon Conley is healthy after missing almost all of his rookie season with a foot injury. He joins Rashaan Melvin at corner, who had a great year in Indianapolis last season and cashed in with a new deal with the Raiders.
Sebastian Janikowski retired after Al Davis selected him in the middle of the first round in 2000. He kicked for Oakland in each of the seventeen seasons that have been played since.
2018 Oakland Raiders Predictions: Offense
It all starts with David Carr, who was tremendous two season ago before breaking his leg just before the playoffs. The injuries came biting back again last season and he never reached the level he played at in Oakland’s 12–4 season two years ago.
Jon Gruden brought in Greg Olson, a proven quarterback coach who has been in the league since the Marc Bulger days and was most recently with Jared Goff and the Rams.

In addition to Carr, top wideout Amari Cooper was banged up for just about all of last season and failed to even record 700 yards receiving.
The offensive line was also hurt with the loss of blindside tackle Donald Penn, who will be back this year and helped by Miller’s addition.
Marshawn Lynch and Doug Martin are the combo in the backfield right now. Both can catch the ball a little bit, in addition to running it hard, but neither is exactly young at this point in their careers. The key to the offense will truly be Carr and keeping him upright and healthy.
2018 Oakland Raiders Predictions: Defense
The addition of Melvin at corner to go with the first round pick from a year ago, Conley, bodes well for a defense that got torn up in the passing game all season a year ago.
But those two will be on their own separate islands out there if Khalil Mack, who is holding out and reportedly hasn’t spoken to Head Coach Jon Gruden since he was announced as the coach. I’ve heard that, of all the early holdouts, this could be the most serious across the league.
Tahir Whitehead and Derrick Johnson are two new linebackers that each have a different skill set. Whitehead can stuff and run and Johnson can do some pass defending, even at age 36.
It can only get better for one of the NFL’s worst defenses a year ago.
2018 Oakland Raiders Handicapping: (Strengths/Weaknesses)
There is a lot of excitement with Gruden coming in and at the same time, a fair number of fans who are pissed off that the Raiders are leaving again. It could make for a weaker than usual home field in Oakland.

If you’re going to play any Raiders futures, you’re betting on two guys: Gruden and Carr. How will Gruden do in a league that’s a lot different than it was the last time he was on the sidelines? And can Carr stay healthy? If he can, he has the weapons around him to replicate his 2016/2017 season.
2018 Oakland Raiders Prediction (Final Record): 6-10
I’m not eager to get behind either one of those guys. There’s certainly a lot of hype but I don’t see a deep enough roster to overcome the inevitable injuries. In a tough division, I’ll pass on the Raiders.
