2018 Los Angeles Chargers Predictions: Roster Changes
The Chargers weren’t so active in the offseason. They acquired center Mike Pouncey in free agency and went defense with their first four draft picks, getting some help at all the levels.
They also Antonio Gates walk after 15 incredibly productive seasons as a Bolt (and double-digit games played in all 15). That wasn’t going to be such a big deal with Hunter Henry poised to build on a good 2017 season but he tore his ACL in March and won’t play at all this season.

Henry’s injury takes away one of Phillip Rivers’s best receivers and puts a lot of pressure on Keenan Allen to stay healthy for a second consecutive season.
There is more help coming on the offensive line, not through any offseason acquisition, but a return from injury. Forrest Lamp, LA’s second round picks a year ago, missed all of his rookie season with a knee injury. He’s back and should be a difference-maker on the offensive line.
2018 Los Angeles Chargers Predictions: Offense
So the offense still has some firepower, even though Henry’s injury is a total buzzkill. The offensive line has been rejuvenated and Rivers hasn’t shown any signs of slowing down.
He will spread the ball out to more than just Allen. Tyrell Williams flashed some speed with his ability to stretch the field last season and Mike Williams, who never got time to get into the rotation after injuries in his rookie year, comes into the fold.

But Melvin Gordon is still the best playmaker on the offensive side of the ball. He can do it all out of the backfield. Last season, he caught 58 balls and this season he should see some improved running holes if the offensive line is as improved as we think it may be.
2018 Los Angeles Chargers Predictions: Defense
Joey Bosa and Melvin Ingram are quite possibly the best pass rushing duo in the NFL. They, combined with a pretty stacked secondary, make the Chargers one of the most difficult defenses in the league to throw on.
The linebacking corps was the weak point of the defense last season but it has seen some upgrades, primarily through the draft, where LA took a USC product, Uchenna Nwosa. Denzel Perryman is also healthy after playing just six games last season, though he has yet to get through an entire season without a significant injury.
2018 Los Angeles Chargers Handicapping: (Strengths/Weaknesses)
The schedule is not bad for the Chargers this season, though the AFC West figures to be a strong division, which is where you have to start when you assess any team’s schedule.
The lack of home field advantage has to be tough to play through, though. The Carson City crowd was dismal last season and doesn’t figure to get a whole lot better this one.

And then there’s that bad Charger luck, just because they’re the Chargers. This team can never seem to catch a break, even though the bad luck is mentioned every season. It’s passed the point of a coincidence.
2018 Los Angeles Chargers Prediction (Final Record): 8-8
This is just how it seems to go for this team. Of course, Rivers has to stay upright and healthy. If he doesn’t, it’ll be a long season. The roster has talent, lots of it but the division is tough and the Chargers just don’t stand out.
