Villanova Wildcats- Team overview/schedule
On the negative side, with an overall record of 9-10 and a conference record of 3-5, things have definitely not gone smoothly for Villanova in the 2022-2023 season.
Unless they pick up the urgency and begin to improve in a lot of different areas, this campaign will end up being a very disappointing one, something that is rarely said with a program like this.
It was understood in the first season without Jay Wright as the head man, there were going to be some growing pains for Kyle Neptune and his ball club. With what we have seen so far, that would be an understatement.
Simply put, the Wildcats are not a team that has a lot of firepower on it. Playing hard and giving an effort has not been the main reason they have more losses than wins. It really just boils down to them not having enough front-end talent, which is something they will need more of to be relevant in their conference and in the college basketball world.
After winning a close one on Monday against a horrible Georgetown team, the Wildcats will be in for a huge challenge when they hit the road to take on a St. John’s team that is just better than they are.
Still, it is a good opportunity for Nova to surprise a lot of people by earning a conference victory over a very tricky opponent.
Impact Players
Although it got way too scary in the end against the Hoyas, Villanova was impressive on the offensive side of the ball with lots of different guys stepping up for them. Five players ended up reaching double figures.
Caleb Daniels, the leading scorer, scored 16 points and Brandon Slater added on 15. Those are clearly two guys that have been relied upon heavily this season and they have really stepped up as leaders on this squad.
Scoring the ball has not been the main issue for Villanova, but the defense just has not been there on a consistent enough level. In past seasons, a staple of Jay Wright-led teams was solid defense. That is something that will have to improve for Kyle Neptune’s bunch this season and beyond.
I am not sure how much it will mean for this year but earning their fourth conference win of the season against a quality opponent on the road might just be something that sparks this team.
In truth, they will have to play a more complete and clean game if they wish to get that done, though.
St. John’s Red Storm- Team overview/schedule
On the positive side, St. John’s checks in with a respectable record of 13-6, but the conference record of 3-5 is not where they would like it to be. Only three teams have just the same amount of wins in the Big East, Butler, Georgetown, and Villanova.
Of course, playing better in their conference has to be a point of emphasis for the Red Storm as the year goes on.
Something that has been quite clear this season is they like to use pace, get out in transition, and score the ball. So far, Mike Anderson’s team is not waiting around to dribble and slow it down, which has mostly worked in a good way for them.
Similar to their opponent, being able to execute well on defense has not happened with enough regularity. Sure, they can score lots of points, but that is not a sustainable formula as the season gets deeper and they keep playing talented teams.
Even though the Huskies have come back to Earth, their last victory over UConn was an impressive one. Most important, with the game being tied at the half, they made the necessary adjustments to earn the road win 85-74.
Two areas that need to be better when they face off with Villanova are free throws and three-pointers. They finished just 23/37 from the charity strike and 2/13 from beyond the arc last time out. If this team thinks that will work every time, they are mistaken.
Impact Players
St. John’s has plenty of different ways to attack their opponent on offense. They really do not have a shortage of scorers.
Big man Joel Soriano is putting up 16.5 points per game to go along with 12 rebounds. On a team that has plenty of weapons, he is really someone who stands out.
In the win over the Huskies, Soriano led the way with 19 points and 13 boards. Posh Alexander and AJ Storr both added 14 points. Overall, they shot the ball 51.7% from the field against a defense that is talented and well-coached.
There has been a little bit of time off since their last contest, but the approach should not be any different against the Wildcats. If they keep up their production offensively and get enough defense, Nova will not have enough answers for them.

Additionally, with the kind of conference implications that are on the line, I expect the home team to come out with urgency and keep that up as the game goes on.
All in all, Villanova will fight and compete, but I do not trust them enough to keep things all that close in the end.
