A unique non-conference matchup late in the regular season takes place Thursday as the Vanderbilt Commodores travel to take on the Cincinnati Bearcats.
Both of these teams would have to win their respective conference tournaments in order to make the NCAA Tournament. The Commodores are trending in the wrong direction while the Bearcats have clawed back to .500.
Vanderbilt Commodores
Vanderbilt has had another disappointing season under second-year head coach Jerry Stackhouse. On the bright side, they aren’t losing every game in conference play like they did two seasons ago. The Commodores have still lost 12 of their last 15 games.
Vanderbilt is 3-12 in conference play following a loss to LSU. The Commodores are are averaging 72.8 points on 43.2 percent shooting and allowing 73.9 points on 46.2 percent shooting.
Vanderbilt always seems to have one or two great prospects despite their losing records. That has proven to be the case again this year with point guard Scotty Pippen Jr. The sophomore point guard averages 20.5 points a game and does a good job dishing the ball. Dylan Disu averages 15 points a night as well.
The Commodores main issue is that they lack any kind of presence on the interior. They are 346th in block percentage and 289th in opponents 2-point percentage nationally. Vanderbilt often plays high-scoring games and is largely dependent on the 3-pointer.
The Commodores are 53rd in the country in offensive efficiency.
Cincinnati Bearcats
Cincinnati has rebounded nicely in AAC play and has won six of its last eight games. The Bearcats fought hard but were unable to come away with a win against Memphis. The Bearcats fell 80-74 to Penny Hardaway’s squad to drop to 7-6 in conference play.
Cincinnati has had two up-and-down seasons in the first two years of head coach John Brannen. The Bearcats have struggled particularly with jump shooting. They convert just 30.8 percent of their 3-pointers and 65.5 percent of their free throws. Cincinnati has, however, hit 28 triples in its last three games.
The Bearcats are averaging 69.5 points on 42.8 percent shooting and allowing 71.7 points on 43.7 percent shooting. Keith Williams leads the team in scoring with 15.7 PPG while Michigan transfer David Dejulius averages just over 10.5 points a night.

Free Vanderbilt Commodores vs. Cincinnati Bearcats NCAAB Prediction:
This is a line that makes little sense. While Cincinnati should prevail in this game, this line is still inflated too heavily, likely due to the Bearcats recent stretch of winning.
Cincinnati is not a team to be trusted when it comes to covering spreads. As the trends above indicate, the Bearcats have been one of the worst cover teams in college basketball over the last few seasons. Even in their recent stretch of six wins, the Bearcats had just one victory by more than three points. This season, seven of their nine wins have been by five points or less.
Vanderbilt hasn’t looked great this season, but they have done well ATS. The Commodores should be able to use their 3-point shooting to hang around in this contest.
