The San Francisco Dons and the Santa Clara Broncos will face off this Thursday night in the Bay in Big West play. Santa Clara opens as the two-point favorites here at home, with the total opening at 148.
HISTORY: Santa Clara and San Francisco have competed in a contested series that dates all the way back to 1950. USF holds a slim 83-81 head-to-head series lead after winning five straight matchups.
San Francisco Dons
San Francisco enjoyed a successful slate of non-conference play. The Dons built a diverse resume, beating an undefeated UNLV team and blowing a ranked Arizona State squad out by 37 points along the way. The Dons look destined to return to the Big Dance, and how they maneuver through WCC play this year will be worth keeping eye on. SF closed the first third of the season with a bang last time out.
Last Thursday, San Francisco defeated Hartford at home, 85-53, covering the massive 25-point spread along the way.
San Fran has responded well to the loss of all-WCC guard Jamaree Bouyee, and been very balanced early on. Khalil Shabazz and Tyrell Roberts get things going in the backcourt. Shabazz, a four-year starter, is on-pace to lead the Dons in scoring after a big performance versus ASU, scoring a game-high 26 points in the blowout victory.
Roberts, a WSU transfer, has reached double figures in each of the past ten games, including a 24-point showing against UT-Arlington. Shabazz is leading USF in scoring (14.7) and assists (3.8), while Roberts is putting up an identical 14.5 ppg.
Former Nevada forward Zane Meeks had a monster 17-point, 17-board showing versus former rival UNLV, and he leads the squad in rebounding (6.4), while scoring 11.6 ppg. A&M transfer Marcus Williams (5.9 ppg, 3.1 rpg) rounds out the 3-guard lineup.
Santa Clara Broncos
Santa Clara also comes into WCC play with some steam and momentum. The Broncos lost a lot of production from last season, but they’ve retooled and reloaded on the fly, and look set to compete within the conference once again this season. SCU put together a respectable resume, defeating DePaul, Iona, and Wyoming, then they topped it off with a strong signature win last time out.
Last Thursday, Santa Clara beat Boise State in battle of Broncos, 73-58, coming through as neutral-sited underdogs.
Santa Clara has overwhelmed teams with their length again so far this season. Jalen Williams moved on to the NBA, but Brandon Podziemski has come in and taken the lead role by storm. The Illinois transfer burst onto the scene with a pair of 30-point performances, and he’s double-doubles six times thus far. Podziemski leads the Broncos in scoring (18.3) and rebounding (8.7).
Sophomore point guard Carlos Stewart (14.7 ppg) caught fire this month, scoring 22 or more four times, including a 29-point outing versus Irvine. Stewart is up to 14.7 ppg, while versatile veteran Keshawn Justice has been consistent, scoring 12.3 ppg and grabbing 4.1 rpg. Senior big Parker Braun mans the middle, and he’s posting personal-best of 8.1 ppg and 6.1 rpg.
CBB Betting Trends

- The Under is 5-1 in the Dons last 6 vs. a team with a winning straight up record.
Free San Francisco Dons vs. Santa Clara Broncos NCAAB Prediction:
Free Spread Prediction: Santa Clara -2
This should best one of the best games on the Thursday night slate, and we have a good feeling about the hosts here. Santa Clara has the length to give a smaller, scrappier San Francisco squad some issues. If SF forward Zane Meeks misses this game, the Dons may find themselves in trouble and out-manned up front. This one shouldn’t be a blowout, and there’s a good chance we see a lot of points from these two WCC schools, but the Broncos find themselves in a very manageable spot to cover at home here. Take Santa Clara’s spread for this bash in the Bay.
