We have a couple of surging Big Ten teams facing off on Saturday, with both of these teams coming off of huge wins and looking to gain an early advantage in the conference.
I can’t stop winning college basketball bets (Had Rutgers beating Penn State and the Under in that game) so you should tail me! Let’s get this bread…
Rutgers Scarlet Knights
Rutgers home win over Penn State, without one of their best players in Geo Baker, was a massive performance that speaks volumes about what kind of team this is.

This is a stout, defensive-minded squad with some serious potential. Penn State’s offense is no joke, and Rutgers held them to just 62 points (17 points below their season average) and a pathetic 6-26 from three (26%).
Rutgers is 19th in KenPom adjusted defense, 15th in Sports Reference defensive rating, and 16th in points allowed per game (a measly 59). Opponents are shooting only 42.7% from 2pt range against them (19th in the nation) and opponents effective FG% is only 44.2% (25th in the nation).
Meanwhile, Ron Harper Jr. continues to rake on the offensive end. Against Penn State, the man scored 22 points on 5-10 from the field and 12-12 from the free throw line. He’s averaging 12 points on 45/30/72 percentage shooting splits.
All-in-all, the Scarlet Knights have won six straight and have covered in seven straight. I’d be scared of this Rutgers basketball team if I was playing in the Big Ten.
Illinois Fighting Illini
Illinois has played a wild schedule so far. However, they’re 11-5, 9-1 at home and 8-6-1 ATS this season.
They’ve played six KenPom top-25 teams this season. SIX. Against those teams, they’re 3-3 SU and 4-2 ATS. They’ve had to play four of those teams on the road as well.
It’s a surprise Illinois has been as resilient as they have been, albeit I guess that’s why they’re called the “Fighting Illini.”
They don’t excel in any one area, as their success seems to be built on being solid on both ends (35th in KenPom adjusted offense and 40th in KenPom adjusted defense, 29th overall).
Ayo Dosunmu and Kofi Cockburn lead the Illinois attack, both scoring over 15 points/game. Cockburn is scoring his 15 on an impressive 56% from the field, and is adding 9 boards/game as well.
CBB Betting Trends:
- Rutgers are 2-6 ATS in their last 8 games against Illinois.
Free Rutgers Scarlet Knights vs. Illinois Fighting Illini NCAAB Prediction:
Here’s an interesting point that may have almost no bearing on the outcome of this game: Both of these teams are among the worst in the nation in three-point shooting.
They both fall outside the top-300 in the nation in 3pt FG%, as Rutgers is shooting 28.6% from deep and Illinois is shooting 29.5%.
Additionally, they both have decent perimeter defense, with Rutgers defending the three at a top-100 rate and Illinois falling just outside the top-125.
These teams are both elite at rebounding as well, specifically Illinois on the offensive glass. The Fighting Illini’s offensive rebounding% is top-5 in the nation, and their defensive rebounding% outpaces the Scarlet Knights by quite a bit.
This is going to be an absolute dogfight of a game. But, as similar as these teams are, I have to side with the home squad here. Rutgers have played just three games on the road this year and are 1-2 SU in those games. Meanwhile, Illinois has been run through the gauntlet in terms of their schedule and they’ve proven to be quite good.
The Fighting Illini win a hard-fought game at home Saturday morning.
