Purdue Boilermakers

Purdue is coming off a home-loss to Penn State, and that’s okay! Because Penn State is a team the Boilermakers should lose to.

They’re still a middling Big Ten team who will probably snag a 10-seed in the Tourney. But, they can’t score. They have just an atrocious offense that shoots just 47.5% from inside the arc and gets to the line at one of the lowest rates in the nation. Additionally, they have nobody who is dominant on the offensive end of the court, as Trevion Williams leads the team in PPG at just 11.

However, their defense is really, really good. The Boilermakers rank top-10 in KenPom adjusted defense, points allowed per game, and 3pt% against (28.6). Also, their average possession length against is 18.6 seconds, which is longer than 347 of the 353 D-I NCAA basketball teams.

The Boilermakers do have a couple things to hang their hat on. First, is that they are the best offensive rebounding team in the Big Ten. Second, they are pretty good at not turning the ball over.

Ohio State Buckeyes

The home win over Rutgers was a win the Buckeyes desperately needed.

However, OSU remains one of the more mercurial teams in both the conference and the nation. They’re 12th in KenPom adjusted efficiency margin; 19th on offense and 23rd on defense. I believe that makes them one of only seven teams with both a top-25 offense and defense (Kansas, Duke, SDSU, Baylor, MSU, PSU).

So, if they are in such elite company, why are they 6-7 in conference play and ranked well outside AP Top 25?

I have no answer, really. Dropping six of seven between Dec. 29 and Jan. 11 is the only way I can explain that away.

However, the Buckeyes may have put that stretch behind them (turned the corner, if you would). Since then, the Buckeyes are 4-1 SU and ATS, winning by an average margin of eight.

Moreover, their top guy, Kaleb Wesson, has been very good during this recent stretch. In the last five, Wesson is putting up 15/9 on 51.9/44.4/75.0 shooting splits. Forty-four percent from three is no joke. Plus he’s adding a block.

I think buckeye fans can be reasonably hopeful. If they pick it up down the stretch and manage to snag a few road wins, we could see their seed jump up pretty high come Tournament time.

Free Purdue Boilermakers vs. Ohio State Buckeyes NCAAB Prediction:

I think Ohio State is a no-brainer here.

The Boilermakers were overvalued after their wins over Iowa and Indiana because they hit like a million shots and shot 96% from three (perhaps those numbers are slightly exaggerated but that’s what it felt like).

But, they just took a 12-point home loss to Penn State, and I don’t expect them to go into Value City and “bounce back”. I think they will lose, convincingly, to a Buckeye team that is better than their record shows.
