Friday night, the Miami Hurricanes travel to Blacksburg, Virginia to take on the Virginia Tech Hokies in Cassell Coliseum. In the last meeting between these two teams in January, the Hokies won on the road 82-70.

Miami Hurricanes

There’s no sugarcoating it — this has been an awful season for Miami. The Canes have yet to win an away game (0-9 on the season) and are just 5-12 in ACC conference play.

What’s gone so wrong for Miami this year? For one, the team hasn’t been able to finish close games. Over the last 10 games, the Hurricanes have two losses by three or fewer points. However, it hasn’t helped that the team continues to get blown out. In that same 10-game stretch, Miami has lost three games by double digits, including a 30 point loss to Duke on March 2.

Miami’s offense hasn’t be able to get it done consistently. The team averages 70.2 points per game, but has hit that average just four times over the past 10 games. Twice, the team has failed to break 60 points during that stretch.

Virginia Tech Hokies

Frankly, this is Virginia Tech’s game to lose. The Hokies are 6-4 in their last 10 games, including big wins over Duke, Louisville, and Pitt. However, the team’s most recent game — a 73-64 overtime loss to Florida State — was definitely a momentum killer.

Tech will certainly look to bounce back and get its fifth win in the past seven games, and it should be able to do so as long as the team gets going on both ends of the floor. The Hokies average 74.1 points per game on 47.6% shooting.

Guard Nickeil Alexander-Walker leads the team with 16.5 points, 3.9 rebounds, and 3.8 assists per game. The sophomore has been huge for this team, scoring in double figures in nine of his last 10 games.
