The No. 2 Maryland Terrapins will travel to Chapel Hill on Tuesday night at the Smith Center to take on the No. 9 North Carolina Tar Heels for the first time in a non-conference setting in nearly six decades.
The Terps have lost five straight in Chapel Hill since upsetting then-No. 1 North Carolina back in 2008, and will face the Tar Heels for the first time since their 2014 switch to the Big 10 conference.
The last time the Maryland the two squared off, the Terps beat the Heels in a 92-71 rout in College Park in 2010.
Maryland arrives at the Smith Center undefeated in its first six contests, after overcoming a slow start on Saturday against Cleveland State, leading by just four points at the half. The Terps pulled away however, in the second half for an 80-63 win.
The bulk of Maryland’s points 77.2 PPG have come from sophomore guard Melo Trimble who is scoring nearly 15 points per game.
Meanwhile the newly added a pair of prestigious ACC transfers, Duke guard Rasheed Sulaimon (11.2 points per game) and ex-Georgia Tech forward Robert Carter (13.0 ppg) are making headlines in Maryland.
But the defense which is ranked 3rd in the Big 10 and 29th overall, is the real reason the Terps remain undefeated.
North Carolina brought back nine of its top 10 scorers from last season and have dropped just one game this year, which was a 71-67 upset loss at Northern Iowa on Nov. 21.
The Tar Heels have bounced back however, beating Northwestern and Kansas State in last week’s CBE Hall of Fame Classic in Kansas City, without standout guard Marcus Paige, who has led UNC in scoring and assists in each of the past two seasons.
Paige however, will start on Tuesday, and his return should help boost UNC’s subpar 32.1 percent 3-point shooting, which five for 18 in the Northern Iowa loss. The senior is shooting 38.1 percent from beyond the arc.
He will rejoin an imposing frontcourt consisting of forwards Justin Jackson and Brice Johnson and center Kennedy Meeks who are all shooting over 50 percent and have helped UNC with scoring an average of 81.3 points per game.
Jackson is especially hot, averaging 22.7 points on 58.1 percent shooting over his last three.
