Maryland is one of the top teams in the nation. They have been pushed harder than I would have expected but probably won’t be here.
Illinois State might be a sleeper in the Missouri Valley but they have not show well yet this season.
Maryland
The Terps are one of the best teams in America. When you look at their lineup you see few weaknesses and they are led by a player of the year candidate in Melo Trimble. He leads the team in scoring at 16ppg.
Maryland is also getting production from its transfers brigade. Robert Carter is scoring 11ppg while leading the team in rebounds and Rasheed Sulaimon is first on the team in assists. So far no problems assimilating them into the group.
Things will really take off for the Terps as they get frosh Diamond Stone more comfortable. The big center has been efficient but he can be more productive too. The best thing of all is that he has shown he can make his free throws.
Illinois State
Wichita State steals all of the attention in the MVC and for good reason but a lot of publications have Illinois State as the next best team in the league.
They won 22 games a year ago and have three starters returning including all league selection DeVaughn Akoon-Purcell, who has upped his scoring to 17ppg so far this season.
Another player taking a leap is PG Paris Lee. Thought to be the best defender in the MVC he has also increased his scoring and assists this season.
The Redbirds would love to bag a big one in the nonconference but they are not going to be able to keep up with a team of this calibre. A good showing will help their profile though.
