Iowa State Cyclones
Iowa State wasn’t as heralded in the preseason as the University of Iowa and it’s still the unranked team of the two, despite having the better record but the ‘Clones are starting to make an impression on those who have seen them play.
ISU has crushed Missouri, Illinois and San Diego State. It also beat up on North Dakota State, which isn’t a rollover opponent, either. Its only loss came against Arizona, by single-digits.
Steve Prohm is off to a 7–1 start in his fourth season as the Head Coach of ISU hoops. His team on the floor is led by a 6’6″ senior guard who averages nearly twenty points per game.
Marial Shayok started fourteen games for Virginia two years ago as as junior. After sitting out last season, he’s starring in his first and what will be his only season at ISU. He also grabs six boards a game.
This is Fran McCaffrey’s ninth season with Iowa and it’s shaping out to be one of his better teams, despite a lack of seniors.
There’s just one, in fact: Nicholas Baer, a slender 6’7″ forward who plays about seventeen minutes a game. Junior forward Tyler Cook pours in over fifteen per game, despite not being a three-point threat. He shoots well over fifty percent from the field, though, and rebounds more than eight per game.
A freshman plays more minutes than any guard on the team. Joe Wieskamp plays about twenty-six per game and scored over ten. He shoots forty-one percent from deep, which is by far the best on the team. Distance shooting isn’t Iowa’s strength. The Hawkeyes shoot less than thirty-two percent from beyond the arc, about 250th best in D-1.
