Selection Sunday is less than a week away as conference tournaments heat up. The ACC Tournament begins Tuesday as the Boston College Eagles get set to take on the Duke Blue Devils.
Boston College Eagles
Boston College has had yet another disappointing season. The Eagles finished dead last in the conference standings (15th) and won just two games in ACC play. Not to mention they fired their head coach mid-way through the season. Their two wins in conference were against Notre Dame and Miami.
One of BC’s best games of the year came in a one-point loss to Duke back in January. Still, the Eagles have been far too inconsistent.
They are led by sophomore guard Jay Heath, who is scoring 15.1 points and is grabbing 3.0 rebounds. He had 10 points, five rebounds and four assists in the first meeting with Duke. Heath poured in 28 points in a loss to Florida State last week. Junior guard Wynston Tabbs was scoring 13.3 points before getting suspended for the rest of the season. Senior guard Rich Kelly is averaging 11.0 points and is shooting 37.2% from the floor. Kelly scored 16 points and grabbed three rebounds in the loss to Duke.
Duke Blue Devils
Duke had a decent shot at making the tourney after winning four in a row in February, but those hopes have largely evaporated after dropping three straight games to end the year. The Blue Devils must now win the ACC Tournament to get in.
Duke has been better without Jalen Johnson, and their offense has been strong in the second half of the season. The Blue Devils do a good job of getting to the basket and have a top-20 offense in terms of efficiency.
Duke should have a field day with a BC defense that ranks 333rd in opponents effective field goal percentage.
Sophomore forward Matthew Hurt leads Duke with 18.7 points and 6.2 rebounds per game. Hurt is shooting 56.0% from the floor and scored 17 points in the first meeting with Boston College. He had a double-double in that game, pulling down 11 rebounds. Freshman guard DJ Steward is scoring 13.0 points per game.
