Despite being 22nd and 26th in offensive and defensive rating, respectively, the Washington Wizards play at the fastest pace of any team in the league.
That’s one reason why Bradley Beal leads the league in scoring at better than 33 points per game. His three-point percentage (33.7) is the worst of his career but he’s making 90 percent of his free throws and attempting more than at any point in his career.
He made all eight and scored 25 points with 10 assists in Washington’s 130–128 victory over Denver on Wednesday. It was the Wizards’ third win in a row, making a new season-high streak.
Two days off is what the Wizards get to now prepare for a four-game West Coast road trip that begins in Portland on Saturday.
They have a day off in-between the Portland game and a trip to Los Angeles for both the Lakers and Clippers on back-to-back nights. Then one more day off before rounding out the trip in Denver for a rematch of the other night.
Portland Trail Blazers
Portland plays a much slower pace — 18th in the NBA — with the fifth best offensive efficiency and the second-worst defense.
That combination has been plenty good for the Blazers of late. They have won seven in a row and nine out of ten, all while CJ McCollum, Zach Collins and Jusuf Nurkic remain sidelined.
Damian Lillard lost out to Luka Doncic in the fan vote for the starting backcourt spot for the Western Conference All-Star Team alongside Stephen Curry.
After averaging 30 for the first time in his career a season ago, Lillard is two-tenths of a point per game below that currently on slightly worse efficiency.
But some are touting him as the MVP of the league, despite slightly worse individual numbers from a year ago, in part because he has carried along a Portland team ravaged by injuries in the New Year.
In his career, Lillard has finished no higher than fourth in the MVP vote. And while he’s still an underdog to win it this year, he may just be in line for his highest finish ever.
But plenty other of Blazers deserve credit. Derrick Jones scored 13 points on 6-of-8 from the field, grabbed seven rebounds, dished three assists and collected two steals and two blocks in Portland’s road win over New Orleans.
Three road wins in a row and a couple days off ahead of this home game have the Blazers in line to win their eighth game straight against the feeble Wiz.
