As part of the full New Year’s Day NBA slate, the Washington Wizards face the Minnesota Timberwolves in their first game against each other of the 2020-21 season.
The Wizards hold the all-time record between the clubs with 33 wins in 59 meetings. Last season, the clubs played the typical two times with each team winning once.
After the copious New Year’s Eve games only two squads remain winless — the Washington Wizards and the Detroit Pistons. Moreover, the Wizards have the distinction of losing an extra game (five versus the Pistons four), and the New Year’s Day game is coming on the second night of a back-to-back set.
Washington has lost to the 76ers and twice each to the Magic and Bulls with all but the Philly game occurring on their home court. Now they’ll travel to Minnesota and try to find their mojo on the road.
While the Wizards can’t find a “W” the vaunted backcourt continues to feast offensively. Russell Westbrook has played in all but the second game of a back-to-back set and registered a triple-double in all four matches he played.
Versus the Bulls on Friday, he registered a 22 point, 11 assists, and 10 rebounds. Bradley Beal and Thomas Bryant both scored 28 points while Raul Neto chipped in 15.
In his regular-season debut, Rui Hachimura delivered 17 points, three assists, and five rebounds.
In the initial two matches for the Timberwolves, this season the team showcased a true commitment to defense using it to seal the victory over the Jazz.
In addition, the top draft pick Anthony Edwards has fit in seamlessly to the rotation punctuating the fact the Wolves made the right choice among the top three prospects.
But then Karl-Anthony Towns fell on the wrist he’d previously fractured, dislocating it which forced him onto the injured reserved list. He’s missed the next two games on the Wolves schedule which Minnesota consequently lost.
That the Wolves had to play the two LA teams in those meetings didn’t help their cause. While D’Angelo Russell had a very rough night versus the Lakers (four points on 2 of 7 shooting) he bounced back versus the Clippers leading the team with 22 points.
Malik Beasley (19), Ricky Rubio (17), Anthony Edwards (12), and Naz Reid (11) were the other double-digit contributors.
Joining Towns as players out Friday are Josh Okogie (hamstring), and Jaylen Nowell (ankle).

Free Washington Wizards vs. Minnesota Timberwolves NBA Prediction:
It might seem like everything is set up for the Wizards to finally get their first win except they are traveling and playing in the second game of a back-to-back.
4* Free NBA Betting Pick: Wizards -1
Washington could load manage Westbrook given the back-to-back. But, if he plays, is the more pressing question whether the Wizards finally win or if The Brodie collects his fifth consecutive triple-double.
