Washington won its fourth game in a row on Saturday, 118–111 at Portland.
A winning streak like that can work wonders at the bottom of the Eastern Conference, assuming a rise in the standings is a good thing. The Wizards have up to 13th with their sights set on 12th.
Bradley Beal scored 37 points on 16-for-27 from the field (.593). He did not even shoot well from three-point range, which makes the total and efficiency all the more impressive.
Russell Westbrook had a 27-point triple-double on 11-for-17 from the field.
Washington lost the turnover battle and was out-shot from the outside but still won the game by seven points on the road. Portland even grabbed five more offensive rebounds. The Wizards were simply better shooting the ball from two.
Moritz Wagner and Garrison Matthews, two relatively new starters, have helped this team compete with opponents’ first five. They finished a modest 5-for-8 for 12 points in the win.
Their toughness and ability to knock down open shots have made the Wizards a much more respectable team than when rookie Dani Avdija was in the starting lineup.
Los Angeles Lakers
The Lakers, meanwhile, lost their second game in a row on Saturday, 96–94 versus Miami.
Kendrick Nunn went off for the Heat, scoring 27 points on just 14 field goal attempts and two free throws. Jimmy Butler had 24, eight rebounds and five assists. Bam Adebayo had a double-double.
Kyle Kuzma led the Lakers with 23. LeBron James had 19, nine rebounds and nine assists but even he turned it over five times.
Of course, the Lakers were without Anthony Davis, who is set to miss at least a month with a little achilles trouble.
But Dennis Schroder, so important to the Lakers with Davis already out of the lineup, missed the game, too. He’ll be in health and safety protocol for at least a week and will miss this game and the one after, at minimum.
The Wizards caught breaks in spots against Boston and Denver already on their winning streak. Maybe they can find a way to keep this thing going.
