Monday, December 13th finds the Washington Wizards tipping off versus the Denver Nuggets in their first meeting of the season. The teams will play their second match in Washington on March 16th.
Both teams last played on Saturday with the Wizards losing 98-123 to the Jazz and the Nuggets defeating the Spurs 127-112.
The Nuggets hold the all-time record having bested the Bucks in 53 of their 94 meetings. Last season the squads played twice with the Wizards winning both contests.
Although the Jazz has been running rampant through the league lately that doesn’t take away from the free fall of the Wizards.
After losing only three times in their first 13 games the Wizards have flipped the script winning just five times in their last 14 games with only two of those opponents from the upper echelon (Heat, Mavericks).
It sure feels like the Wizards caught teams by surprise early and everyone has adjusted. Entering week five, the Wizards held the fouth ranked defense (102.4) and were a plus +4.7 in net differential which ranked tenth.
Flash forward to the present and Washington has dropped to 17th defensively (108.9) and has a negative differential (-1.6) that ranks 22nd.
More telling is their performance in the noted last 14 games — they rank 26th defensively (114.9) and have a negative differential of -7.6 which ranks 27th.
In the loss to the Jazz, Bradley Beal led his team in scoring (21), Daniel Gafford posted a double-double (14 points, 11 rebounds) while Raul Neto (13) and Spencer Dinwiddie (12) offered double-digit scoring.
Kyle Kuzma (COVID-19) is out indefinitely joining Rui Hachimura (personal) and as the Wizards have done the entire season list Thomas Bryant (knee) as questionable.
I’ll keep banging the drum for Nikola Jokic to repeat as MVP (or at least get more consideration). Although Steph Curry should win if the award was handed out today there is no denying how valuable the Joker is to the Nuggets or questioning they’d be lottery-bound without him.
Jokic came two assists shy of recording a fourth consecutive triple-double with his effort versus the Spurs although he’ll likely be most satisfied with the victory. He registered 35 points, 17 rebounds, eight assists, a steal, and two blocks.
Two-way contracted player Markus Howard got his shot to play more and responded with 21 points hitting six 3-pointers. Monte Morris (19), Aaron Gordon (16), and rookie Bones Hyland (16) were the other double-figure scorers.
If the youngsters Howard and Hyland can provide consistent 3-point shooting it will go a long way to helping the depth of the Nuggets.
Will Barton (illness) didn’t play Saturday and is questionable as is JaMychal Green (ankle). Austin Rivers (COVID-19) is out indefinitely.
PJ Dozier (torn ACL) and Michael Porter Jr. (back surgery) are out likely for the season while Jamal Murray works his way back from a torn ACL but with no definitive return date.
